i dunno - 20K? 30K? depends on how much money i have

ive already spent thousands on my pet to board them when i go on vacation...what's another 20K

although my spouse says it's cheaper to kill them and just buy new ones when you go on vacation

oof. When our dog was dying she had triple organ failure, late-stage terminal cancer, and lost consciousness that she was unlikely to regain. For several thousand dollars, we had the option of a massive full blood transfusion which would allow her to live another day or two, fall ill again, and finally die. Seemed cruel and pointless and we didn't do it.

Long story short, seriously ask yourself if you were in your dog's place, would you want this medical procedure? Sometimes it isn't just the money in question, it is the pain and suffering involved. If my dog now had a treatable form of cancer and was told that for $20k I could buy a magic pill that saves her and makes her normal again I'd write a check. If they told me it would pay for a number of awful procedures that would prolong her life for a month for which she would still be in awful shape but only cost $100 I would pass.

If the pet is old and sick, I wouldn’t spend much. Especially if I thought it’d have a shitty qol.

If it’s young, otherwise healthy, and curable, I’d spend an extremely irresponsible amount of money. Maybe 50k in my current financial situation.

I said prognosis matters. So far I’ve only had to pay for surgeries with a good prognosis (over 75-80% chances of recovery). So those decisions are easy. I’d prob pay $10k for anything over 50% and adding a year of life. Less than a year and less than 50%, I dunno, prob not any amount.

I’ve spent 15k in the last 6 months and it was never a hard decision since my dogs only 8. Toward the end of life, I believe a dog lets you know when it’s time. Generally it’s when they’ve lost appetite, can’t go potty on their own/take walks, etc. they’re kind of just there and miserable. Too many owners are in denial and try to keep the dog alive for longer they should.

I felt terrible for him since the vet misdiagnosed it as a reaggravation of an old back injury and he was on crate rest for like months and lost a bunch weight from not using his leg muscles. We did laser therapy and even acupuncture to speed up recovery. Finally I took him elsewhere for a second opinion and turns out he needed ACL surgery. I wish I got a second opinion earlier and spared him all those months of discomfort. He’s on the mend now though.

I have 2 cats and I love them but dislike the practicalities of having them. If it was high-quality life after, I suppose up to $5k each.

We just had a friend spend $8-10k on surgeries for a dog and wife and I agreed that's too much, so whatever the number is for us it's lower than that.

You can't compare cats with dogs. My max for the cat is some ridiculously low number. He gets his one shot every year and that's about it. He's a semi-feral cat that I'm sure will leave one day and never return and that will be that.
