Same - I started in Econ phd and took first 1.5 years then switched to stats due to hating econ. Econ was fucking absurd - we basically didn't even touch data the entire first year it was absurdly theoretical (although admittedly the department I was in was very heavy in micro theory / game theory).

But even the first year econometrics sequence (Greene book obviously) was basically all proof based / theoretical. I then moved over to stats and LOVED it - stats was like a fucking hub of research for the entire university. People collaborated with statisticians from genetics, biology, psychology, finance, medical schools (analyzing fmri imaging data etc.), etc.

I know this is anecdotal obviously but the statisticians were generally happier people too - the economists there was this dark undercurrent in the department of political power battles, inferiority complexes, etc.

basically.

burning down libraries is generally unchill. additionally, some microeconomic theory (utility maximization math, and some of game theory) has contributed a lot to A.I. . also there a few history oriented economists (barry eichengreen, christy and david romer) who do useful stuff.

mixed feelings. not a huge fan of stuff that evaluates things in terms of 'efficiency' and other nebulously defined costs and benefits, but i have a soft spot for the subfield of institutional economics and coase in particular

It's also an incredibly broad field - moreso than almost any other departments in university than I can think of. You have people doing stuff from applied econometric methods which are useful to every academic field out there to people doing heavy econometric theory to industrial organization to game theory mathurbation to various macro fields to applied econ which could easily be split up depending on your specific interests you could be indistinguishable from an epidemiologist or applied health researcher etc.

conceptually akin to reserve creation through QE, but using different instruments and reaching different agents in the economy

i like to call them 'prestige arbitrageurs' -- people who were good enough at math etc to do physics and pure math, but not good enough to be superstars in that field; so they went into econ to dazzle people with their ability to do calculus and get hailed as geniuses. this gig is kind of up now, and these people are running the same con game in other social 'sciences'

i think undegrads do it b/c it makes them marginally more employable than doing a humanity or polisci, although nowhere near as employable as CS. as for lower ranked phd programs, idk. maybe theyre eyeing some chill govt/consulting jerb or are just delusional

1) People who actually like their field of research

2) People who mistakenly equate economics with fianance / hedge funds / quant jobs and are in for a wake up call when they learn that unless you go to a top ~5-10 school, these jobs actually hire out of math / stats / physics / etc. rather than econ

3) people chasing prestige - keep in mind that Econ actually has one of the best academic job markets, both in demand and especially in $$, as rough as the academic market is
