if you buy an inverse levered fund and the price moves in the direction you're betting on fairly smoothly, you'll make a lot more money.
for example, if you bet on a daily 2x inverse fund and the underlying asset moves -2% each day for 5 consecutive days, the underlying returns -9.6%. lots of people expect that they'd make 2x in the opposite direction, or +19.2%. however, the actual return is +21.7%, which is more than 2x the inverse return.
now let's assume that the returns chop, so you have 3 days of -2% and 2 days of +2%. the unlevered asset returns -2.1%. the 2x daily inverse fund returns +3.67%, which is less than the +4.2% (-2.1%*-2) return you'd expect from naively applying a -2x multiple the the total period return.
when it comes to any levered fund that offers you a certain multiple of the daily return, as most of the levered etfs do, you have to be cognizant of how "choppy" the market might be versus how "trendy".
generally, markets chop more than trend so the leverage tends to work against you. |
