Triples and HRs should count as doubles for the purposes of records.

And similarly, HRs should count as triples for the triples record. |

Date: July 17th, 2018 2:38 AM Author: Concupiscible shimmering forum i just don't see the need to elevate the term "record" in the way you're using it. lots of shit gets recorded. early baseball bros started tracking hrs because they knew they were impressive. they started tracking cycles b/c they thought they were kooky and interesting. the term "record" is typically used in sports to connote achievement but the textbook definition is just recordings of data. you're arguing that cycles are in fact the latter but shouldn't be considered the former. i don't think anyone would really disagree.
to the extent that the fact that we record them all implies that we value them in some way - i guess this is really what you're arguing - that doesn't really imply anything about why we value them/whether we value them as anything more than interesting oddities, not completely irrelevant to the question of whether the player is talented but also not strongly indicative of it in any way, nor is it designed to be.
no hitters can be fluky and can be pitched by mediocre pitchers but they almost always mean that the pitcher pitched a damn good game. doesn't have to be that way and it isn't always that way but at least the premise of why we'd be interested in them is that it's athletically impressive to get 27 pro batters out without giving up a single hit. the premise of the cycle isn't athletic impressiveness as much as it is just the spectacle of it. to buck's point in OP i don't think there's anyone who would say that a 4-4 day with 3 extra base hits including a home run is more athletically impressive than going 4-4 with 4 hrs. |
