eh i think one of the problems is time and the passage of time--I've thought about this in other contexts. Big generalizing statements, but, as time goes on, maybe the sort of people "you" *want* to be frequently participating in a community like this are going to less and less be able to do that; while the sort of people you *don’t want* to be frequently participating in a community like this are still going to be able to participate just as frequently if not more so. You can gather the reasons. But it seems like an almost inevitable outgrowth of XO's origin and its original demographic base. So, ceteris paribus, maybe there's just a natural decay that takes place here.
Such a tendency could be countered by the thoughtful, periodic injection of new poasters into the poasterbase--a fresh batch of scholarship tps and johnsmeyers and j shads for the taking, delivered right on time, every first sunrise of autumn, lads--rest your weary bones, original zeke tp, a new zeke arises to bolster your poasting! But that's a nut that rach has just never seemed to crack (along with plenty of other internet sites)--he seems to get overwhelmed when he's tried a restrictive-subjective approach to new registration; open registration attracts a cohort that just doesn't quite fit the bill (is the genesis of xo unique and just unrepeatable in 2018--something to think about); and either method attracts the attention of the most-interested insidious megapoasters who want to collect another set of alts to play with, muddying the waters in either event.
So there we are. Note, I don't even know if I actually endorse what I've written above, but it's just a line of thinking to consider. Also, one counterpoint to my thesis here, which sort of recalls Theseus's paradox: if the poaster cohort has this natural evolution over time so that the prominent participants aren't necessarily the most desirable from the perspective of the original xo crowd, does that necessarily make the newer content "bad?" This wades into the subjectivity-objectivity of art criticism debate, right Tolstoy? Or maybe just a question about what defines XO as "well-functioning"--whose standard? If we take the people left standing on their own terms and observe that, among themselves, they're making content that they themselves find great, well, hell, maybe things are moving along just swimmingly. And maybe threads like the one OP has created are more the last gasp of a breed that just doesn't have a place here, at least not in any prominence, and we can mourn the "Golden Age" xo, get all Virgilian and angsty, while also being mature enough to recognize that things just change and that's okay

"If we take the people left standing on their own terms and observe that, among themselves, they're making content that they themselves find great, well, hell, maybe things are moving along just swimmingly."
The problem w this is people don't make quality artful poasts that are self-insulating against varying viewpoints. too many days now its just a wall of blockheads impervious to counterfactuals, scrawling their Hitlerian or Ayn Randian or evangelical nonsense without a shred of self-awareness or irony.

Well … I know youre joking but I was thinking more in terms of basic "scholarship" so it couldn't be something that would get xo shut down.
As I said, we could have people contributing good articles and spin off discussions from those articles on as rarified a level as we can reach. the articles themselves would only be accessed if you joined... and the joining would have to have some sort of selection process as well.
You make another good point, which is the people who can megapoast for years on end are not typically going to be people who are blasting along at the highest echelons for years while poasting for years. After a while, they are going to be too busy or too … ahem … politically vulnerable to stay on boart. As a result, we get a lot of people who, well, time is one thing they've got plenty of. Time and … opinions.

this is an interesting thought--how much of content and style and, just generally, the Site Culture Code, is influenced by poasters' environments versus their innate interests. If you hold the cohort fixed (not necessarily a realistic assumption, as, to one of my points above, some may be more inclined to leave or decrease participation than others as time progresses) but you suddenly shift them all to a rural environment east of Seattle, WA--a Poaster Farm--how much do things change on the bort? I think the optimist's case is that, while environment may affect the subject of the content, it doesn't affect its quality. But your idea seems to suggest that maybe there's something unique about a pressurized environment that lends itself to better content generation, all else being equal--the "bort as release valve / interaction island in the midst of Deal #858585" is better, objectively, than some other configuration. Will be an interesting panel discussion at the next XO Symposium.

i can only speak for myself
but the best poasting, the out there stuff, the rare gold nugget that tumbles through the silt of blank bumps and shitty one liners and makes an audible clunk in the pan, creativity reduced to plain black text on a white background and manifested onto the bort as a snuggie-clad peter north clambering headfirst down an industrial shelving unit by way of the poast button. it's inspired by a brief, unholy mix of despair, cynicism, consciously undeserved self-pity, another deadline that isn't going to be met and so ratchets the doomsday clock closer to a late afternoon meeting in a conference room on a different floor with 2 partners you don't recognize
a tortured artist is a man seeking escape and achieving more than he's able in the process. an untortured artist is a happy inhousemo who once screamed into the void and now blithely thanks into the void, content to live out his days in obscurity. maybe poasting is a young man's game after all.

i think there may be a difference in kind between the usual, rose-colored glasses lament of "historic XO was better!" which seems to be a claim made about every single year in the greatbort's history, versus what's evolved here in the past few years. And I say that as something that still really lieks it here and recognizes that these things ebb and flow. In other words, maybe you're making a false equivalence to place criticisms (or just observations) about xo 2018 into the same bucket as the rest of the historical "the past was better than the present" claims. xo 2014, to reference a period I know about directly, strikes me as a different place from xo 2018. The hinge point seems to have occurred sometime in '16 or '17. Of course I'm open to contrary arguments that, in fact, this is the way it's always been. And, to be clear, I don't think that makes xo a "bad" place; just different now.
