Is Cravath worth it?

Wachtell or some other above market?

What’s the difference between DP, S&C, PW, etc

Everything seems awful

choose wachtell because it pays a lot more than other firms. choose cravath because it's very selective and "prestigious." SullCrom and DPW are peers. Skadden is not a good firm.

Can you elaborate on the Skadden thing?

It does seem they take sort of TTT people...like T30 law review types. Not that that's bad, but like, it ain't WLRK.

Yes, but I can't just pick up and move wherever -- I'm still expected to be available to go to occasional meetings and meet with clients.

I could probably get away with traveling / working from somewhere else for a month or so at a time.

Why not live somewhere cheaper in California? Maybe somewhere down the coast? I don’t see the point of living in Silicon Valley if you don’t even have to go into the office

Housing being expensive is working for us now that we own. Our $700k townhouse almost doubled, then we sold. Current house is up at least $1m from when we bought it a few years ago. This is pure luck and could all disappear so I haven't spent it, but I am hopeful that the house continues to appreciate.

The attraction to being in SV is also for wife's job and both of our future opportunities. We could probably sell, pocket some gains, and buy something less expensive in Paso or somewhere on the coast, but if either of us wanted to switch jobs or was forced to, it would be an issue. Much easier to find other comparable jobs in SF or SV than in SLO or Eureka or some place that's cheaper enough to make a move seem worth it.

Wife's parents are 20 mins away, too, and bought to be close to us. Moving away from them wouldn't be a popular decision.

Our daily life is also really nice: My wife has friends here, we can walk or bike to a bunch of parks, a few schools, a library, a couple of suburban downtowns, some grocery stores -- it's really not bad.

What are your goals?

Do you enjoy grinding hard and working? For example, are you the guy who color coded case briefs?

I see absolutely no benefit to Cravath. It's "prestigious" but all V20 firms are, so who cares. You work harder for nothing. If you're the color coded briefs guy, maybe it's for you.

Does Wachtell still pay 100% of salary as a bonus? If so, that's the obvious pick. Take the money.

Otherwise, pick a V10-V50 firm instead because (with some notable exceptions) you may work slightly less and you'll be around less gunners.

cravath sends a ton of people to lazard. this is inapplicable to 99.99999% of people here but it’s a real benefit over say s&c or cleary. as a general rule working at places non-lawyers have heard of maximizes your chances of actually getting the hell out of law
