“It’s not just money that a job provides,” Obama said in his Nelson Mandela Lecture in Johannesburg on Tuesday, after mentioning the threat new technology poses to jobs. “It provides dignity and structure and a sense of place and a sense of purpose. So we’re going to have to consider new ways of thinking about these problems, like a universal income, review of our workweek, how we retrain our young people, how we make everybody an entrepreneur at some level.” |

You could quit your job now and get on unemployment benefits. Its incredibly easy to do that which you probably know.
On unemployment, you could stop paying your health insurance premiums and get your family on medicaid right now.
You could get your family on food stamps right now, but you don't.
You could get a section 8 voucher and stop paying your mortgage.
You could go shoot up now and get that high but you don't.
All of this money already exists for you - UBI is just structuring it differently to incentivize better behavior.
Under UBI, you wouldn't have tons of illegitimate children because child support would be taken directly from your UBI, which means less money for you and which you want to avoid. You will wrap it up.
UBI would also be something meager like $1k a month. Something that allows you to live, but not well. You would get a job if you had an ounce of ambition to get to the middle class, but you would be struggling, you would never take a vacation, and life would be tough. But if you stay together with your wife, that is now $24k per year. And if you and your wife get even minimum wage jobs, that is $60-65k per year for your family, now we're talking. But with the current welfare programs, it makes more sense to not even work at all than to work a minimum wage job. |
