Before the advent of globalization, corporations practiced "stakeholder capitalism", in which the company had responsibility not just to shareholders, but also the employees and the community

With the advent of NAFTA / WTO liberalization this tacit responsibility was essentially ignored in favor of solely improving the lot of shareholders.

Profit maximization. Tax minimization. Regulatory arbitrage. Wage arbitrage. That's the name of the game now.

These corporations grew exponentially using these tactics and then co-opted the government/regulatory (and increasingly the liberal "religious") apparatus in the country. Google and Obama were basically married at the hip. You think Google (who is a monopoly of the highest order) would ever get smacked down a-la Microsoft in the 90s?

think people here attribute some kind of agency to gc, like it’s deliberately trying to destroy them. it also conveniently allows self-proclaimed conservatives to bitch about their perceived lack of material wealth without technically blaspheming against the idea of “regular” capitalism.

(Not high iq)

'capitalism' is like victorian businessmen in tophats and monocles

GC is the computerized voice from 2001 going 'heh'.

GC is capitalism with the birth of consciousness, so basically unbeatable in Hegelian dialectical terms

We haven't had entrepreneurial capitalism since the Great Depression. That was succeeded by managerial capitalism.

Basically capitalism culminates in Pareto optimal monopolies. Whether those monopolies continue to be Pareto optimal is mostly a political question.

So I don't see a difference between the evolution of capitalism and global capitalism.

The better fault line to fight from is whether solving the scarcity problem is the be all end all. Personally I'm willing to pay extra to live in a country that reflects my values, given that I only need like 25% of my income to cover necessities.
