Set aside, if you can, the making tons of money. I've talked to a lot of people who have money and/or make a ton of money.

He makes plans (through some calculus I didn't inquire about) and follows through. Completely self-assured. Has it all planned out and no doubts about any of it.

Was breath-taking to chat with him (although it was mostly text chat and maybe something is lost in this).

I think part of it is just not caring about what other people think is important. I could care less what other people think of me or what they think is prestigious or what they think is important in life. When I summered at a big firm I realized it wasn't for me and even though it was 160K starting salary (which was a ton for a 25 year old), I basically wasn't interested. I have no trouble turning down what other people perceive are good opportunities.

I only think about what makes me happy, I make that a goal, and I work my ass off to get it. To me, family is the most important and spending time with them traveling, eating, watching movies, and hanging out. There isn't a single thing in my life I regret. If what I want changes, I alter my goals accordingly. If someone doesn't like me, then I don't want to be their friend.

He’s a 180 guy.

He makes it seem TOO easy to be a shitlaw king though. He obviously works his ass off so I question how much time he actually has to spend irl having fun

I have lots of free time. Especially since I work for myself. I do take calls at night and do a few hours here and there on weekends, but i work way less than biglaw hours and I have no commute. I take off random days all the time to go to disneyland (we have annual passes), we go to at least 1 movie a week, Ive been to 40 or so countries, I work out, and I spend every night with my son from 530 until he goes to bed. On weekends we always have plans with friends/family and at least one weekend day we do a theme park, museum, or something else fun with the baby. I spend weeknights 10pm-midnight fucking around, reading the news, or playing video games when my family sleeps. Sometimes my wife stays up. We are playing crash bandicoot right now.

xo needs a vasectomy thread. are u wanting it or ur wife is pushing it or both? when the time comes, it'd scare me... but maybe i'd feel differently when it does.

My wife never asked. Its way less invasive for a man to do it than for a woman to have her tubes tied. I dont want her to do an invasive surgery for no reason. Also its reversible if we want more kids later. I just dont want any accidental pregnancies and BC isnt 100%.

doesn't he have relatives in the shitlaw biz?

even if they are only shitlaw dukes and not shitlaw kings it's a lot different than some random bro hanging shingle in farthest portelande who has to figure out the game from the ground up

I have literally zero family members who are personal injury lawyers except for one. My third cousin is going to be president of the Consumer Attorney's Association of Los Angeles (so I guess he is well connected).

However, I didn't talk to him for like 10 years prior to being a lawyer. We chat a lot now because we both have successful practices and obviously it brought us closer. But he never taught me PI, he never gave me samples, only refers me cases once in a while (one every month or two but I get 40+ cases a month on my own) etc. He has a completely different way he does PI cases. He only has a case load of 40 cases (that are mid-six figures) and he doesn't take soft tissue cases. He wouldn't even know how to work up a whiplash cash into a 50-100K case. He pretty much only takes hard injuries (amputations, brain damage, comas, etc). Our business models are nothing alike.

I learned PI by literally just taking cases and figuring out what worked and what didn't work. My entire firm set up and work flow is completely unique and custom made by me. It is the same workflow adopted by Chandler and Kenny (and many other attorneys I have mentored). In fact, I never worked for a PI firm prior to starting mine, and I have never worked at any other law firm (other than my own and my summer gig at a big firm). My two prior jobs after law school were business analyst for my wife's company, and in-house for someone famous on the board (where I did their litigation against business partners/former employees).
