I remember before they started cracking down on illegal downloads there were websites where you could download a dudes favorite songs. It would be like a cheesy geocities page with the guys collection of songs. The record companies got those shut down and then napster and the p2p's filled the gap. On college campuses you had internal ftp networks where people shared entire playlists. This is all in the early to late 90's.
The record companies' reaction seemed so ridiculous to me, even back then. They could see that these new delivery systems were extremely popular among young kids and they had almost a decade's notice and they couldn't come up with anything? |

The actual business that needed the music itself to be profitable would have been much better situated to work to improve the product. It’s understandable that Apple never cared to do it, since they already had an absurdly generous split of the revenues—Apple got a third of every mp3 sale. This is the same music industry that for decades paid 7 cents per dollar to artists who actually write, perform and market the actual music and literally are the product.
