any us car history mfes know how it came to be that dealerships became called marco rubio toyota rather than just toyota of northwestern miami or whatever? why did the owners' names become brand names themselves? is there any other store there the franchisee's name is use?

IGA Supermarkets, True Value Hardware. But I think the reason the dealer’s name is there is obvious. They’re salesmen.

Your logic isn't fleshed out. Just because they're salesmen, Why does the name of the owner sell?

You think cars just sell themselves? A salesman is REQUIRED, otherwise people would just gawk and not make a purchase.

Plot Twist: While there is not a toyota dealer in Northwestern Miami, the one in Northern Miami is in fact just called Toyota of North Miami. https://www.toyotaofnorthmiami.com/

In Chicago where I grew up there was a car dealership owner named Max Madsen and he marketed himself as "Mad Max Madsen" and the commercials were him calling his psychiatrist to tell him about the great new deals on a pre-owned Mitsubishi he planned to offer, and his psychiatrist saying he was CRAZY to offer such deals

My parents met Al Piemonte while buying a Nissan Sentra from him. He came in at the very end of the price negotiations, proclaimed that he was in a good mood because one of his race horses won a big race that day, and knocked off another $300 off the price of the car.

The car fell apart like three years later it was a piece of shit.

It's ego and atavistic territory marking.

The same reason you'll see modest strip malls in smaller cities with names ("Johnson Plaza") taking up significant space on the signage.

Of course, no one other than the owner gives a fuck who owns the dealership or the strip mall.

If I want a Big Mac, I go to the nearest McDonald's. Grocery shopping? Nearest supermarket (at a chain I like). With cars, it is a bigger purchase and the deal you get at one dealer may be materially better than at another dealer. So Bob Smith Chevy is competing against John Jones Chevy as much as they are competing against Ford, etc. Therefore, they have to brand-- buy your Chevy at Smith Chevy, not Jones Chevy. TVs, washers, fridges, etc. are different because you don't go to a washer store, you go to an appliance store. Appliance chains compete against each other to sell you a Maytag -- buy your Maytag at American Appliance (chain), not National Appliance (chain).
