The south coast of England is pretty dense, and of course the coastal parts of Belgium and the Netherlands have big cities. Why didn't France ever develop a big city on the English channel? Biggest metro area is Le Havre with 250k population.

historically because of raiders and warfare. vikings really tore the place apart for a while. and wars with england always led to pillage.

1) Viking raids during Viking Era.

2) Then hundreds of years of war with England who would have ass fucked any cities on the coast.

3) Hundreds of years before "Viking Raids" there were Scandinavian raiders raiding the western European coasts -- even during roman times and pre-roman times. So neither the Gauls / Celts nor the Romans put any cities there.

yeah this is why nobody lives in the North of England or anywhere in Ireland, because those areas got pwned by vikings 1000 years ago

I assume they probably did too, but France has a larger interior area with better climate and farmland to retreat to, whereas England being a small island would always be more dependent on the coasts and seafaring, and southern England probably has the best land for farming.

True but England still has 5 metro areas on the south coast each larger than Le Havre:

Probably because the Franks, who controlled France and Germany, had other cities for that. Then when France became a nation there were safer southern ports.

Yeah, just seems like the French really missed out on having a big important port city right there on their front doorstep in one of the busiest shipping areas of the world. Maybe there's no good natural port?

Normandy is awesome and I want to retire there.

I think maybe part of the real answer is that the Channel was historically hard as hell to navigate. Calais was the main trading port with the UK because it's closest to the other side. There wasn't a major economic demand for ports on the Channel coast outside of Calais which was the main conduit for trade with the UK.
