I agree but my building has a gym and sometimes it's just more convenient to get a run in after a workout for my cardio than it is to go on a hike

Huge difference.

7 minute mile on a treadmill is like running a 7 minute half-mile on the street.

my experience is the opposite, its easier to run at a faster pace outside than on the treadmill. suspect this depends on the accuracy of the treadmill's calibration

Interesting.

My experience is that I can run at 10 mph on the treadmill for 25 minutes no problem -- feels like I can do it indefinitely. Never have to breath heavily. If I run that speed on pavement, I will gas out quickly. Can't do it for more than a few minutes.

on the road or especially the track, u have to overcome inertia and apply torque to generate speed; on a treadmill, u r merely skimming , like a rat spinning

Look at the McMillan calculator online. There’s some difference but not that huge. Don’t think you can do the same times outdoors as on TM but they are both fine for training.

Treadmill and street should be pretty close. If you can do a 6.5 min/mile, you **should** be able to do the same outdoors.

The biggest difference might be the perfect pacing a treadmill provides. The slight acceleration/deceleration due to imperfect self-pacing outdoors will slow your overall time. If you want your max time, best bet is group running so your pace is evened out.

On the other hand, the treadmill usually causes higher cadence running.
