The definitional debate isn't all that interesting, but it's at least reasonable to define savings as the amount by which income exceeds consumption and to exclude (or partially exclude) real estate as a consumed good.

I'm also confused by this.

Take a simple example where I buy a house for $1M with a 1 year balloon mortgage at 5%.

are you saying at the end of the year when I have a fully-paid off house worth $1M that I didn't save $1M? Yes, I paid $50k in interest, but I fail to see how you wouldn't count that as savings. I now have a $1M asset on my balance sheet.

After a nice meal, the Chens like to hit up a Broadway show. Tickets range from $60 up to $1,500 on average for the latest hot show. But given they aren’t earning multi-millions, they often settle for $250 tickets at most. In other words, a date night out easily costs $1,000+.

Her pantsuits from Gucci, Dolce, and Chanel easily cost between $2,000 – $3,500 each. On average, she buys one work suit once a year to keep her threads fresh, although sometimes she buys a couple during holiday sales.

With every power suit must come matching Manolo Blahniks or Jimmy Choos at the cost of between $800 – $1,000 a pair on average. Below is a regular black satin pump by Manolo for $995 before tax at Nieman Marcus.

After the pumps, Rachel must of course own a work-appropriate tote bag that can cost anywhere from $1,000 – $3,000. She prefers the understated Prada bags with their hard waterproof exterior. Below are some of her clothing examples.

Given Colin is a stay at home dad, he doesn’t need to spend anything on work clothes. However, he does own and appreciate an array of finely cut blazers to go along with his designer jeans and button down shirts for when they go out. Each custom blazer costs between $1,000 – $1,500 on average. Designer jeans run between $180 – $300, and shirts from the likes of Thomas Pink can range from $80 – $250. He only has one watch, a stainless steel Royal Oak Audemars Piguet he bought for $16,000 years ago.

No idea, but having a nice old watch and wearing $300 jeans isn’t what I’d call extravagant. The blazers are on the high side, but I’ve spent more than that on suits.

$18,500 (401k) + $6,000 (HSA) + $60,000 (529) + $28,800 (mortgage principal) + $54,433 (more savings) = $167,733

Rachel sees a therapist every other week to help her manage the constant pressure she feels to provide for her family, outperform her peers, and outperform the markets. The market takes no prisoners and every month she starts with incredible anxiety. She’s only as good as her last month’s performance. This type of pressure has begun to pulverize what little peace and quiet she has left inside. She’s also recently begun to develop heart palpitations, which has her worried.

Colin also sees a therapist once a month to help him get through his feelings of unworthiness for being a stay at home father. Although he’s truly a great dad, he often feels gutted to have given up his management consulting job. None of his friends, who all work, understand what he’s going through. He feels isolated and often depressed. Sometimes he gets jealous of Rachel’s success, which leads to bitter fights.

Lol author must be writing xoxo bait with references to bottomless mimosas etc.

Also math doesn’t add up since 401k, 529 etc are all savings. And how come the effective fed rate is so high. Mortgage, property and charity interest deductions need to be included. Fed effective should be closer to 26-27%.

I would feel bad if they weren’t such idiots about spending. Working 65 hours/week til 60 is brutal. All they have to do is cut back on some excesses (clothes, food/entertainment, country club, cars) and that can easily be brought down to age 50.

I made well over a million last year and I'm about to break 2 million for this year (and it is only August). My wife and I did a spreadsheet a couple months back that tracked our average spending over 6 months. We did this because we were curious how much our kid raised our expenses. Although I do appreciate the author's downright nutellaesque solution:

"If I was Rachel, I’d either ask for a three-month sabbatical or dial back work to 40 hours a week for less compensation. Making $500,000 a year with less stress, fewer hours, and a lower effective tax rate sounds so much more reasonable."

Just do $500K 9-5 WFH Fridays.

If I was Rachel, I’d either ask for a three-month sabbatical or dial back work to 40 hours a week for less compensation. Making $500,000 a year with less stress, fewer hours, and a lower effective tax rate sounds so much more reasonable.

Which, works better if your husband isn't a leech. $500k + $250k means they make only $250k less than they did before. Move to a nice suburb and you get that back in the form of taxes, no private schools and lower housing costs.

Oh I agree. Whenever you see "salary of $1,000,000, which they budget by" - it is a dead giveaway because the number is too round. Few people make exactly that or even consistently around that. A lot of comp for those sorts of numbers vary year to year.

Still kind of fun to discuss.

Lol I would never offer such unrealistic advice. It’s like a big law partner asking to cut back hours or for a sabbatical.

My advice would be to:

1) stop spending like rap stars

2) quit and get a lifestyle job (she can be head of IR or something else cushier in the industry)

3) and if that doesn’t work, go all in and get a PM job that pays at least $1.5-2m for 65 hours/week. $1m is low pay as a PM in your mid-40s.

Hilariously, these not unrealistic characters count oppulent and extravagant consumption as mandatory spending for basic essentials.

If this couple were willing to live like a household making $200k, they could retire in a few years.

The public elementary school is excellent but then it’s garbage gang infested schools. The plan is to move to a better school district for middle and high school or during the next major housing downturn. RE is a better investment than private school. We don’t plan on selling our current home and will keep it as a rental property.
