I generally hit 8-10 fairways at 240 carry on a decent draw.

Push mid-irons right - not releasing wrists to close face. Will hit 4-7 greens in regulation.

Average 36 putts, serviceable around the green and can get up and down.

Pretty athletic for early 30s.

Have an 8x9 foot net in back yard, newborn at home. Chip and putt available 15 min from office. Will probably get very few rounds of 18 in.

Not sure if time is better spent w live coach, video program no instructions at all - pure repetitions. Or add putting in house - no carpet. Dream would be to flirt with 80.

That's really bad putting, especially considering how few GIR you are hitting/how often you are chipping. You should be shaving 4-5 strokes off right there.

Honestly, if you are already a better-than-bogey golfer, I'm not sure what you are worried about. Are the guys you're playing with all scratch? You probably aren't going to be able to change anything significant about your game that will reliably shave off more than a shot or two between now and than. Just keep playing a lot so you aren't rusty. Also, why are you not hitting a few more GIR? Short a lot of the time, or all accuracy? If latter, maybe you should go to the range and work on that mid-iron accuracy. Other than that, work on your putting I guess.

Yeah this is pretty much right and the information I provided the left it self to this response. I need to work on the six and seven iron, which I will consistently put even with the whole but 5 to 10 yards off the green, then 2 put on a par four for bogey.

Take Dave Pelz' short game handicap test and work from there. 150 and in is the entire game of golf provided you can safely get off the tee.

Get your lie angles checked as this can decently effect your wedge game if you have an off the rack set.

Poster above nailed it. Putting/short game.

It's not as fun or sexy, but that is clearly what you need to work on with 36 putts a round.

Something's not adding up. You "carry" the ball 240 with a draw (meaning you're hitting 260-270 yard drives), hit 10 fairways, have a good enough short game to "get up and down", merely push your irons a little right, and still only have an index of 15 (which means the best 10 of your last 20 rounds average to 87 (on a par 72), so you're probably poasting quite a few rounds in the 90s)?

Yes, your putting stats are truly atrocious, but I'd bet that ballstriking is just as much of an issue. What's the deal with the putting? Lots of three putts? Speed control? Or are you missing the 3-5' knee knockers? What's your average distance from the hole on your first putts (this could point to ballstriking and wedge play more than putting)? If you're missing the short ones, get a putting mirror (like $10 on amazon) and get to work with gate drills, strings and chalk lines. I'm guessing your alignment is poor if you're hitting so many putts, so get that straightened out and consider left hand low or at least a neutral/prayer type grip to help with shoulder alignment. Also, one thing that lots of amateurs don't realize or take into account, is that the hips shouldn't be rotating at all on putts. You want quiet legs/hips.

At your handicap, for ballstriking, I'd work almost exclusively on wedges and driver, at a 3-to-1 ratio. Go to the range, put your iPhone on a tripod and take some video. Review and make sure your setup and alignment are solid. Most mistakes begin right there. Once that's ironed out, hit a ton of wedges, most of them controlled, and to different distances. Take out your 52 and hit it 60/70/80/90/100 yards, etc. Find your rhythm/tempo, make sure you're on plane and that the arms and body are in sync. After you've dialed in your wedges, pull out your driver and hit 10-15 and try to keep the same rhythm you had with your wedges. After you've done this type of block practice for 45 minutes, spend the next 45 minutes in target/course mode. Switch up your clubs and hit to different targets. Use your preshot routine on every shot. Imagine specific holes on your home course, including the hazards, ob, etc. Then spend the last 30 minutes working on putting like I mentioned above.

I've spent 3 hours of range time each week since this thread dialing in wedges and working on driver. Wedges are dialed in 4x3 style from 55 to 125 with some gaps hopefully getting filled out with the addition of the 48. My driver miss is right; I don't close the clubface enough and produce a straight pushed shot or a slight fade. I feel like that is holding me back. Yesterday I shot 44/39 and didn't find the driver rhythmn til hole 8, after which point I think 6 of 7 drives were nice draws between 270 and 290. This improved by developing rhythmn, releasing hands, not overswinging and coming inside the ball. I have a hard time getting my hands around on the downswing. I played on bent grasss and had 34 putts, with 19 on the front. Each 3 putt resulted from a long putt where I couldn't get inside 8 feet, then missed. I am excellent at 6 feet and in. I hit 4 fairways and 6 greens in regulation, doing heroic work with those wedges. I think I was like 10 of 14 getting wedge shots inside 8 feet.

You're not staying behind the ball through impact, easy to do with the driver. My miss is the exact same. Stay with your target another half second.

This is actually CR advice. Driver is one club where you really need to focus on the feeling of staying back, and transitioning and turning "behind the ball". I get wonky with my driver when I start getting left too quickly. Causes my path to get way in-to-out and I flip the clubface shut and hit hooks.

Can't wait to hear about it. We're you the one whose Streamsong trip fell through and you were looking for suggestions on where to do a golf trip? Where did you guys finally decide on?

I'm a West Coastmo and my parents have a second home in La Quinta, so most of my golf bro trips are just me and my friends squatting at my parents' place and playing PGA West and Silverrock. My goal is to get trips into Bandon and Scotland before my Dad is too old to play well.

lol. same with my Dad. he was absurdly long in his prime. he had this hideous 8* Wilson Ultra driver with an XX-stiff gold boron shaft that he could carry like 315 on the fly. I couldn't even get the damn ball into the air with it. He's still a good player and won his A flight club championship this year, but he's lost a ton of distance. A good drive for him is 250 these days. Instead of giving each other any strokes, I just play the tips and he plays the whites. On his home course it's a 900 yard difference. If my driver is off, I basically can't beat him.

ya my dad is still very solid with his mid irons and full swing wedges but the driver only carries like 210 now and his short game has gotten a little yippy. too proud to get a chipper or square strike or other flame infomercial chipping club but some of the guys he plays with use those to dominate around the green lmao
