It has a bit of personal drama like Heat but it's more integral to the plot. In Heat they could cut a lot of that shit and it wouldn't seem like you're missing anything.
One thing that you notice is that Mann knows how to direct a shootout. So many films have unrealistic shit happening like bad guys inexplicably missing and shit, but Mann knows how to direct that shit. Heat is probably the best in that regard.

Legit cat burglars - they would jetski or scuba up to waterfront houses around dinnertime, throw a rope up to the 2nd floor, and grab all the jewelry out of the bedrooms, leave by the street. 5 minutes later the jewelry would be in an envelope in a mail drop box waiting to be shipped off to some other state, everyone would be in separate cars driving off.
