think about suburbia. everyone owns and lives in the same cookie cutter mcMansion. now, on its own, a McMansion is enviable.
but now multiply that by a thousand. everyone and their cousin owns and lives in a McMansion. so the nice 2 car garage, manicured lawns, and 3 floor house turns into a trailer home in virtue of the fact that every other house in a 50 mile radius looks exactly the same and comes with the same amenities.
now imagine you live in the same McMansion in a neighborhood of townhomes. your McMansion has now transformed into a veritable CASTLE, the object of envy.
compare to Earl logic: he thinks that his BMW, which is a fraction of a second faster 1-60 than my Mustang, is a much more valuable car than mine. that is simply not the case. literally everyone around him drives a BMW, or mercedes, or whatever german strivermobile the yuppie crowd drives. so the value of his car is actually lower vis a vis my Mustang.

Date: November 26th, 2018 11:41 PM Author: Gay church building Obviously the most predominant cars in Korea are Hyundais and Kias. Sort of how you see a bunch of Fords, Chevys and Toyotas in the US.
But there are thousands of Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin, Maserati, Mclaren etc., owners in Seoul. I’m not even including M cars or AMGs, although there are thousands of those. At the last Ferrari Club Korea meetup I went to, there were over 100 Ferraris (I don’t own a Ferrari but I went as a guest of a friend).
I know the Korean car scene in and out and am a member of several of the top-end clubs both in Korea and the USA. The only real criticism you could level against the Korean car scene is:
1) No real “custom” scene, i.e., no “ricers” or “tuners” to any serious degree (i.e., you won’t see shops willing to do a 1,000+HP tune on a Turbo) 2) Very little variety in the models of premium makes - you see a lot of Aventadors and 458/488s, but little else from Ferrari or Lamborghini. Good luck spotting a 918, Pagani or anything of that sort. 3) Very few places to actually drive your car. Stop/go traffic is death to your car so you have to drive over an hour out of Seoul to find anywhere decent to drive or to track it. 4) Car club meets are basically just grabbing coffee and showing off. Although US cars and coffee meets are more or less the same, the premier car clubs also offer a lot of technical and driving sessions nearby. Korea has something similar but far less frequent and you have to travel far.
I go to cars and coffee every week in the US and my car is usually the nicest or one of the nicest ones there. Don’t act like there are Lambos and Ferraris on every street corner in NYC. It’s mostly Mustangs, Chargers or some ricer with a Civic. Like anywhere else, if you want to see nice cars, you need to know people and where they are gathering. Like hell we’re going to park by some proles who are going to sit on our hood for a selfie or put their dirty hands on our paint. And I promise you nobody is gathering in Gangnam station. |
