I just switched to a 24 hour fitness and it is SPS. Crowded at all hours with tatted up freaks, clueless fatties, and persian bros who drowned themselves in cologne before hitting the gym. The equipment sucks and it is difficult to get on anything. The experience is so much better at a more expensive gym, it is worth it if you work out 5-6 times a week. Paying $300 per month at equinox versus $30 per month for 24 fitness. And its not like the squat rack at equinox is any less crowded.
Unless you are loaded and the 24 is significantly less convenient, I can't imagine picking the former.
Also you don't work out 5 times a week - unless you are just bullshitting to avoid your family.
My local 24 hour shut down so I have to drive an extra 3 miles in rush hour - so I MIGHT consider switching to equinox which is across the street - but there is no way paying $40 per work out session is worth it. |

I actually agree that some bars weight a few ounces more and some weights with different rubber may weigh an ounce or so more than the different ones.
But as long as the weights are the same within the gym, you can do your same work out. If you have to lift 2 pounds less at a different club because the weights are slightly different, not a big deal.
So I guess I meant free weights work the same at any gym. |

Question about fancy gyms. Are they more accommodating of those who want to laze around for a bit on a machine after a set? I like to watch Jeopardy for ten minutes after I do a set on this bicep curl machine (machine has a great view of the tv that's always on abc). A few times someone from the gym has come over to ask if I was finished with the machine. It's annoying. I'm not some dumb meathead who needs to lift something every minute he's in the gym.

Machines often broken, TVs not working on machines, wait times during rush hour and same old precor and life fitness machines as 24 hour. Equinox only makes sense if you treat the gym like a social club where you can go hang out. Common spaces are nice, food is decent and there’s a nice roof deck. $250/mo isn’t enough to keep out riff raff when people are living paycheck to paycheck so they afford their 3 series leases and gym memberships. The 24 Hour/LA Fitness type gyms are oversold and difficult to work out in on top of dirty and unpleasant places to be.
I agree you don't need a lot of equipment, but it is nice to actually be able to use it and not be surrounded by human filth. |
