the film ends with some rather vague blather about aliens contacting humans. that seems like more of a starting point than "the end."

From Dusk til Dawn - not a blockbuster in intention or box office.

E.T. - hasn't aged well, all the original kid actors become too old quickly.

Commando - a very generic action movie and the main character is just Arnie

The Fifth Element - not very financially in the US.

ET sequels probably would have recast the roles or just used new characters. Besides, some blockbuster series succeeded by changing the tone after the first film. Rocky is a good example of this

Your points about Commando are correct but irrelevant.

I concede on the other two movies.

uniquely bad and stupid in its own way = correct, but ignorant that sequels were being made and some complaint that they aren't blockbusters

blame me for having a shit word without a clear definition? "A blockbuster is a work of entertainment – especially a feature film, but also other media – that is highly popular and financially successful. The term has also come to refer to any large-budget production intended for "blockbuster" status, aimed at mass markets with associated merchandising, sometimes on a scale that meant the financial fortunes of a film studio or a distributor could depend on it. "

ferris "Released by Paramount Pictures on June 11, 1986, the film became one of the top-grossing films of the year,"

ncfom "Budget $25 million Box office $171.6 million," domestic $70 million. i agree it's not a blockbuster, but it was best picture and to call it uniquely bad and stupid for being brought up is just being a bitch

pulp fiction "Against its budget of $8.5 million and about $10 million in marketing costs, Pulp Fiction wound up grossing $107.93 million at the U.S. box office, making it the first "indie" film to surpass $100 million. Worldwide, it took in nearly $213 million.[89] In terms of domestic grosses, it was the tenth biggest film of 1994, even though it played on substantially fewer screens than any other film in the top 20." so, whatever.

Inception - good one

The Game - the game was, at most, a minor blockbuster (just over $100mm in the late 90s against what was undoubtedly a significant budget) but i agree if it had gained significant traffic in the rental market, indicating a larger audience for a sequel, they could easily build off the first film or remake with new actors in the "game"

The Replacements - the replacements wasn't a blockbuster it was a huge box office bomb ($50.1mm against $50m budget before marketing). also, how would they set up sequels anyway? the regular players just keep striking at Reeves team just never adds significantly to their roster via draft or raiding the CFL or finding more random misfit toys?

Space Jam - maybe

Bad Boys - already had a sequel ... Bad Boys II, that did passably at best as far as box office performance

Space Jam was not especially profitable because of the huge budget, plus you'd have to convince MJ to make another one.

yeah, i recall thinking space jam wasn't a hit/had a huge budget but wiki says it did $230mm against $80mm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Jam, which isn't bad.

i agree it'd be hard for them to get MJ back, but people actually liked the first one i could see them succeeding with a new sports icon (obv has to be one of the very most popular) and having MJ do a very short cameo to pass the torch over to him or something.

Waterworld bombed but if it had been a success they could have made a couple more. It was a fun concept.

Jim Carrey could have made more Liar Liar movies. I'm surprised they never made a sequel, given they did for Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber.
