First up: lifekeepers by Mark McQuay. literally post-apocalyptic BBC with obligatory blonde co-tagonist. JJC, eat your heart out.

Second place: WYRM by Mark Fabi. An epic adventure through Y2K's MFH with a healthy dose of CRPG. Honestly worth a read, I really enjoyed it.

Third place: Starfish by Peter Watts. A child abuse survivor finds a place on the ocean floor maintaining a geothermal power plant. Russian infiltrators will really enjoy this one.

Honorable Mention: Carnival by Elizabeth Bear. I hate female authors but this novel about two homosexuals infiltrating an alien planet full of Amazonians is certainly worth a mention.

Lifekeepers and Carnival are a bit light on the sci part of the fi, but carnival holds up a little bit better IMO.

Starfish and the following 3 books in its series hold up in the current year, and WYRM is an interesting glimpse into the zeitgeist and technology of 1999.

I feel like I should elaborate. Watts is clearly versed in biotechnology, if not an expert. the science is 99% believable and 1% XO. WYRM is a novel about cRPGs around the millenium, and while it's certainly outdated, really is an interesting peek into network engineering and MUD/MOO design around the turn of the century.

Found another - CYBERBOOKS by Ben Bova.

This one's great. It's a story about an engineer from Boston who goes to the big city (NYC) to sell his invention - a small device about the size of a paperback on which you can read books. doesn't sound very revolutionary, but the book was published in 1989, almost 20 years before the first e-book was released.

Why is it XO? It's really got everything. Jewish editors changing their names to present as white, japanese engineers who say things like 'risten, this a velly bad' and contemplate harakiri, lanky German villains, Armenian bellydancers, incompetent corporate dweebs who exclusively hire redheads with fat asses, paunchy 45-yo bros getting steroid treatments and turning into Tarzan... do yourselves a favor and download the e-book.

redheads with fat asses are nice but nowhere near as xo as a dweeby publishing house manager animorphing into Zeus and, fully nude, running into the dining room, throwing his wife under his arm, and taking her to bed while the dinner guests make idle comments about his 12" MANPOLE.

Found another I dimly remembered reading once.

(((Asimov)))'s Nemesis. Took me a few chapters to suss it out, since no physical descriptions besides height and hair length are used until the elderly Japanese director of Earth Security uses a frightfully outmoded RACIAL TERM (Euros!) to refer to the homogenous inhabitants of a space station. Of course, at this point it is revealed that the entire plot is a thinly veiled 'intergalactic BBC' feature where earth security's biggest, blackest agent Crile Fisher is sent on a quest throughout earth's many space stations to seduce important female scientists and steal their secrets.

His daughter Marlene is a telepathic mulatto whose mother is a Very Important astronomer. An old flame of hers is introduced some way through the book - an affable Swedish fellow named Genarr who never sealed the deal when they were dating in grad school, but still pines after her and is excited to meet the daughter because he thinks she, at 15, will be as hot as her mother was.

this is 100% not flame and the plot of the novel.
