All boys UMC catholic HS at that time:

Mornings: gather in parking lot around 8AM to play hackie sack. Lots of Cherokees and late 80s mustangs. Kids wearing this kind of cap:

https://www.fanatics.com/South_Carolina_Gamecocks_The_Game_Classic_Bar_Adjustable_Hat_-_White/t-68453144+o-61+d-86776653+f-8180951+z-8-2155203485?_s=GPA_CA&sku=9320532&targetid=pla-299684803422&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxoH8xpLF3QIVhYvICh3vmgREEAQYASABEgLFjvD_BwE

By 8:25 we had to get to homeroom, so guys would have to scrounge for a necktie from the backseat of the car. The CR look was a ratty tie over a plaid shirt, with a blue blazer over that. Umbro shorts instead of boxer shorts under khaki pants. Clarks shoes. Hair long in front, parted on the side under the baseball cap.

People got away with murder with the dress code. Then once a year they would start sending people home for not having belts or wearing athletic socks.

Our dress code was strict. Collar buttons had to be buttoned, no hats indoors (which meant it had better be off by the time your nose passed the threshold), no athletic socks, had to have a belt on (and they were wise to the slightly untucked shirt trick if you forgot).

I can tell you about 1993.

People had undercuts and jnco corduroys. Lots of band shirts. Ringer tees and track pants had moments. Big Johnson shirts were the shit if you could score one.

Devil sticks and hackey sacks were popular.

https://www.throwbacks.com/content/images/2018/02/628--12--1.png

Probably 3% of white people listened to rap, though that changed after Rage Against the Machine, Cypress Hill, and House of Pain.

Doom was the most popular "video game."

People knew smoking was bad but didn't care that much and still smoked anyway. It wasn't edgy like it is today.

Phil Donahue and Ricky Lake were mandatory after school viewing. The big problem of the day was "dysfunctional families."

Best part: no cell phones. People carried quarters or used 1800 collect. Or if they were rich, had their parents' calling cards memorized. Rich kids and drug dealers also had beepers. But you were not accountable all the time for your whereabouts like today.

People listened to radio all the time including the 9:00 PM countdown to see what the biggest songs of the day were. People watched way, way less TV. There was no 24 hour news, so you had to watch it at 7 AM, 6PM, or 10PM, or read a paper or catch up on it from someone IRL.

People at my school were never into jnco luckily

Lots of 80s Jeep wranglers, jeep cherokees, and ford explorers.

Hacky sack was huge.

Big bands were ratm, cypress hill, ministry, Nirvana, snoop/dre , and Garth brooks

Beavis and butthead was huge.

Girls were less competitive about clothes than they are now in the social media age. Plenty of hot chicks were into alternative music and wore stuff like gap tank tops and jeans and basically dressed like Cheryl Crow/wore choker necklaces. There was no way to get designer shit by mail order, so this was true even in rich suburbs. (This modern rich kids of instagram thing where girls in flyover know what Chanel is and shit did not exist at all.)

this was basically true even into the early 2000s. You wore whatever you could buy at the mall

High school in 1992 was excellent - hypercolor t-shirts, GAP flannel, Birkenstock sandals and doc martins, jordans, indoor soccer shoes (if you were a soccer bro), chili bowl haircuts (zack morris syle), girls with tight acid washed jeans, cb radios instead of cell phones, sneaking out and knocking on random girls' windows, parents had no idea whatsoever of our whereabouts at any given time.

in a lot of ways my high school looked like an episode of saved by the bell only more country.

lots of metallica, snoop and dre, megadeath, rage against the machine, etc. blaring from car stereos.

A few random observations from a small public ARE country HS in ~1990:

First day of deer hunting (rifle) season, probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the male students would be absent.

Lots of tapered stonewashed jeans and band t-shirts - mainly Metallica and Megadeth. The "...and justice for all" shirt with the scales of justice was damn near ubiquitous.

Because my HS was so small, there was a lot of overlap between the sub-cultures. For example, most of the honor students were varsity athletes.

All school assemblies began with a playing of the national anthem.

Nobody had mobile phones or beepers.

Lots of pickup trucks with gun racks in the student parking lot.
