It isn't a file cabinet that you just reach back in and withdraw a pristine memory. Memory is plastic and can be shaped by many different things in the intervening years. Even traumatic memories.

And when they are presented with what they said the week after 9/11, they say that they misstated what happened THEN because they are still so sure they are remembering it right 20 years later.
