Libs really, really hate college football. A college football player at someplace like Michigan is getting a scholarship worth $250K, about $20k in stipends over 4 years, plus free food, clothes, laptops, ipads, bowl trips with additional $500 gifts, and trips to places like Rome during the spring. This is on top of being treated like a god by other students, receiving preparation to make it to the NFL and make millions, and being handed jobs by alumni after graduation. I am so sick of libs crying about these poor exploited athletes. I would have killed to be exploited by an SEC school and drown in hot coeds for four years.

The big Saturday afternoon game between Big State U and Big State Ag is, among other things, the outcome of a system in which disproportionately black players do violence to each other for the benefit of a largely white audience. These players are not paid, despite the billions they generate in revenue for organizations run by rich old white men; the scheme by which they are nominally treated as students as part of a baroque attempt to avoid workers’ compensation payouts has corrupting effects on the colleges and universities they attend, which are among if not the most powerful institutions in the states in which they’re sited; the players perform, amidst military themes and trappings, in large, generally publicly-financed stadiums; college football in particular is plagued by issues of sexual violence that are fraught in ways that are beyond this rhetorical construct to get into.
This shit is political!

ok I will explain it slowly so that ur deadspin-addled brain can comprehend it.
In baseball, if you're a highly touted prospect you have two choices: (1) sign out of HS, take the signing bonus, and go to the minors, or (2) take a scholarship offer and play college ball, in which case you commit to a minimum of 3 years in college, after which you can re-enter the draft. (In fact, you then have another choice of whether to take your junior-year signing bonus or come back and re-enter the draft after your senior year, a bit of leverage which many players exercise to their benefit).
in football that decision does not (meaningfully) exist, because the NFL is too greedy to pay for developmental leagues and has a rule against drafting high schoolers. as a result, the only realistic choice for football players is (2).
There is no problem with (2) provided you have chosen it freely, as playing college ball beats the shit out of the minor leagues in a myriad of ways. The complaint is that, for football players, they have not made that choice freely. The reason they have not chosen it freely is because there is an NFL rule otherwise. Therefore, take your complaint to the NFL.

It's an unbelievably disingenuous and low iq position to say universities should pay college athletes. If they don't want to play they can fuck off and title ix would cause all sorts of problems. But if you actually cared about the students or the players which would you advocate?
1. Salaries from the university fucking over the students
2. Giving athletes the same right as everyone else on the planet--the right to accept free tattoos, free chips and salsa at chilis, free cars from jimbobs dealership, the right to autograph cucky sportsnuts cocks for profit, and the right to accept jobs?

if a football player at a university feels that he is generating revenue for his EXTRACURRICULAR club that is being undeservedly withheld from him, then why doesn't he drop out and do a "one-man show" of athletic talent and capture that revenue for himself?
it's because he, himself, isn't generating all that much value. the value comes from the "brand name" of the university, the team and other structures the university provides, etc.
also, remember that they call themselves STUDENT-athletes. "student" comes first. focusing too much on your "ecs" to the exclusion of your actual coursework is... unseemly. that's not, fundamentally, WHY you should be attending a four-year university program as an enrolled student.

Alternatives have been tried and continue to be tried. No one is interested because ultimately fans would be following an inferior product without the tradition and natural fan allegiances of CFB. There is no market for it and it is not because of the NCAA.

The Pacific Pro League would only employ players not yet eligible for the NFL. Players would receive, on average, $50,000 a year, though multiple people briefed on the idea stressed there might not be a cap (a star running back, for example, could earn $100,000, plus opportunity for endorsements). Yee has promised that the style and schemes would mimic professional football, not college.

Buts that’s already true today - except the money is going to coaches/facilities instead of the players.
If you allow the alumni to pay the players directly, then the biggest losers will be the 600,000 strength coaches, etc.

Only 20 schools make any money off football. Any move to making it a semi-pro league will see the 20-30 teams that people care about break off into their own league. College football in its current form would almost immediately disappear.

These are probably the only teams that would make it if colleges started paying their players.

A four-conference, 32-team league, for argument’s sake, could look like this. It could be 40. It could be fewer.
Big North: PSU, OSU, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, ND
South East: UF, UGA, Tennessee, SC, FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC
South West: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, TAMU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State
West: Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington

The worst are the people involved with the bowls.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/12/14/bowl-game-executive-pay-soaring-around-1-million/949198001/
In Atlanta, the president of the non-profit Peach Bowl, Gary Stokan, made about $684,000 in 2015, part of a deal that included first-class travel, travel for companions and social club dues. In 2005, he made about $266,000.
• In Tampa, Outback Bowl boss Jim McVay earned $993,458 in 2015, including $426,750 in bonuses. Ten years earlier, he earned about half of that. This year, his game is part of a 40-game postseason that starts Saturday and ends Jan. 8.
“Everything has grown,” longtime bowl advocate Wright Waters said of the larger college sports economy.
Such growth is fueled in large part by money from ESPN, including about $470 million a year it pays to televise the College Football Playoff format that started in 2014.
But after reaching new heights in recent years, such riches have opened these organizations to renewed criticism, especially with Congress taking aim at excessive compensation for tax-exempt businesses. It also reveals another stark contrast between the compensation earned by those who run college sports and the players who perform in them. In annual bowl games, players get a free trip and related benefits and are limited to $550 in gifts from bowl organizers, such as wrist watches and sunglasses.
“It’s completely immoral,” said Ramogi Huma, a former UCLA football player and longtime advocate for improved player benefits in college sports. “When you have that disparity and contrast it with a bowl executive director making a million dollars, when these players put their bodies on the line year-round and generate the money for that bowl game, it’s upsetting.”

What kind of a low-T, limp wristed manlet gets upset because college athletes don't get compensated "fairly" for their "labor" (LOL)?

It is interesting that the lib narrative has changed. It used to be the money from football needed to be redistributed to women sports. The last thing they would have promoted is paying football players. Not when the women's water polo team is chronically underfunded.

It's not the fault of women's sports. It's the fault of football.

There are 53 players on an NFL team. The Univeristy of Colorado has 130,
85 of whom are on full scholarship.
I'm all for back-ups and substitutes but can't the guy who's forth on the depth chart at right outside linebacker also be fourth on the depth chart at left outside linebacker? Ifa college football team cut back to 70 scholarships, they'd still be three deep in every position and have a fourth string punter and place-kicker. 15 scholarships. That's a wrestling team.
Josh sees Amy in the distance and gets up.

amateur atheletics are in many ways better than pro leagues.
if the NCAA lets colleges pay players, i'd support my power 5 school dropping out and remaining amateur only
