Libs really, really hate college football. A college football player at someplace like Michigan is getting a scholarship worth $250K, about $20k in stipends over 4 years, plus free food, clothes, laptops, ipads, bowl trips with additional $500 gifts, and trips to places like Rome during the spring. This is on top of being treated like a god by other students, receiving preparation to make it to the NFL and make millions, and being handed jobs by alumni after graduation. I am so sick of libs crying about these poor exploited athletes. I would have killed to be exploited by an SEC school and drown in hot coeds for four years.

The big Saturday afternoon game between Big State U and Big State Ag is, among other things, the outcome of a system in which disproportionately black players do violence to each other for the benefit of a largely white audience. These players are not paid, despite the billions they generate in revenue for organizations run by rich old white men; the scheme by which they are nominally treated as students as part of a baroque attempt to avoid workers’ compensation payouts has corrupting effects on the colleges and universities they attend, which are among if not the most powerful institutions in the states in which they’re sited; the players perform, amidst military themes and trappings, in large, generally publicly-financed stadiums; college football in particular is plagued by issues of sexual violence that are fraught in ways that are beyond this rhetorical construct to get into.

This shit is political!

why not just let the market determine their value like we do with literally every other adult who possesses a sought-after skill? pro football players get all the stuff you mentioned plus a market rate salary.

That would destroy CFB. This is still amateur athletics. There is nothing preventing the NFL or anyone else starting a professional developmental league. This has been tried multiple times and I believe there is already a league set to launch next Spring.

ok but what does that have to do with an adult's right to receive whatever value they're worth? college coaches are paid millions and yet college football survives.

If you pay players a salary, you are creating a de facto professional minor league. We all know how passionate people are about minor league sports. It would become much more mercenary and ultimately the product would be greatly diminished and people would stop caring.

what people don't seem to get is that it is an NFL RULE that the NFL won't take people under 21. Not a cfb rule. If the NFL wants to start siphoning off players straight out of high school, ok, let it. It's what baseball does. I see no reason why cfb should have to change to solve a problem which the NFL created.

NFL policy is irrelevant. The problem is that college football players aren’t fairly compensated for their labor. Everyone gets rich but them.

ok I will explain it slowly so that ur deadspin-addled brain can comprehend it.

In baseball, if you're a highly touted prospect you have two choices: (1) sign out of HS, take the signing bonus, and go to the minors, or (2) take a scholarship offer and play college ball, in which case you commit to a minimum of 3 years in college, after which you can re-enter the draft. (In fact, you then have another choice of whether to take your junior-year signing bonus or come back and re-enter the draft after your senior year, a bit of leverage which many players exercise to their benefit).

in football that decision does not (meaningfully) exist, because the NFL is too greedy to pay for developmental leagues and has a rule against drafting high schoolers. as a result, the only realistic choice for football players is (2).

There is no problem with (2) provided you have chosen it freely, as playing college ball beats the shit out of the minor leagues in a myriad of ways. The complaint is that, for football players, they have not made that choice freely. The reason they have not chosen it freely is because there is an NFL rule otherwise. Therefore, take your complaint to the NFL.

Oh no I get your argument, it’s just beating around the bush.

Student athletes are not paid because the universities have a law that says they cant pay them. Yet everyone else gets to profit off their free labor. Profiting off the labor without fairly compensating it is wrong. The athletes should be paid what the market demands.

Not if that’s what their skill set is worth.

Have a rule that universities can pay players. Vast majority will just get a scholarship. A minority will get paid beyond that.

ok. college baseball programs have decided that everyone's skill set is "worth" a scholarship. (actually scholly limits in baseball are artificially low, so some guys get 1/2 scholarships, etc.) If you don't think that's a fair offer, you can take your minor league deal. The market at work!

I don't see why the rules for football can't be the same.

It's an unbelievably disingenuous and low iq position to say universities should pay college athletes. If they don't want to play they can fuck off and title ix would cause all sorts of problems. But if you actually cared about the students or the players which would you advocate?

1. Salaries from the university fucking over the students

2. Giving athletes the same right as everyone else on the planet--the right to accept free tattoos, free chips and salsa at chilis, free cars from jimbobs dealership, the right to autograph cucky sportsnuts cocks for profit, and the right to accept jobs?

if a football player at a university feels that he is generating revenue for his EXTRACURRICULAR club that is being undeservedly withheld from him, then why doesn't he drop out and do a "one-man show" of athletic talent and capture that revenue for himself?

it's because he, himself, isn't generating all that much value. the value comes from the "brand name" of the university, the team and other structures the university provides, etc.

also, remember that they call themselves STUDENT-athletes. "student" comes first. focusing too much on your "ecs" to the exclusion of your actual coursework is... unseemly. that's not, fundamentally, WHY you should be attending a four-year university program as an enrolled student.

The NFL fans ITT don't really get how little money most college athletics programs get, and how little "value," in a monetary sense, most college football players add. Very few teams are UT, and very few players are Vince Young.

Alternatives have been tried and continue to be tried. No one is interested because ultimately fans would be following an inferior product without the tradition and natural fan allegiances of CFB. There is no market for it and it is not because of the NCAA.

https://www.si.com/mmqb/2017/01/19/nfl-d-league-college-ncaa-football-alternative-don-yee-2017-draft

The Pacific Pro League would only employ players not yet eligible for the NFL. Players would receive, on average, $50,000 a year, though multiple people briefed on the idea stressed there might not be a cap (a star running back, for example, could earn $100,000, plus opportunity for endorsements). Yee has promised that the style and schemes would mimic professional football, not college.

As someone stated above, the argument that "college athletes should be paid" has all sorts of problems. That said, the NFL should not have a rule forbidding drafting college players until after they spent time in college (nor should the NBA). Also, the NCAA should not give a shit whether an athlete gets a job, free car, a burlap sack of cash, etc. from boosters.

You could be right. However, I think college football is affected by this less than college basketball. Too many impact players on squads with nearly 100 players.

I actually have season tickets to watch an FCS team and I am not bothered by the fact that I am watching a smaller program and not watching Oklahoma. The same way I much prefer college football over the NFL.

Finally, who are we kidding, boosters have always been there and have always given kids extras-- just that most of the time they don't get caught.

Schools are pretty rigorous about compliance now, although you have to be naive to think people aren't getting some stuff for free. $100 handshakes are essentially untraceable. The stuff going on at Mississippi was relatively minor and they couldn't get away with it.

LOL as if that's not what we have now. The NCAA should stop being retarded about stuff under a certain threshold. That's how all other public entity gift compliance works. And the real issue here is the federal government of the early 70s. Amend Title IX to allow revenue sports to pay a stipend that at least ensures a kid going to college and his mom aren't below the poverty line. You could literally pay every scholarship football player a $25K stipend and it would be less than half the salary cost of the 20th highest paid coach and the same as the salary of the 56th highest paid coach, the no name dude who coaches fucking Navy. It's fucking embarrassing to have football make this much money and these kids have to go back to the most wretched ghettos in the country over Christmas break. Anything more than that should come from endorsement revenue that would only be available to a handful of super elite players. And allow players to negotiate with agents the entire time they're in school and help them do it to maximize their leverage. Benefit the players more at the expense of the shady profiteers. Don't do the opposite, i.e. what college basketball did, conspiring with literal mobsters at shoe companies.

All of this will make the gap between haves and have nots bigger, but there's huge change already coming when the streaming services start outbidding the cable networks and forcing all these weird new match ups. It will be like a top 40 and then a net-negative program balance sheet under class. You have to get one of those 3,280 scholarships to get a stipend.

Lol you guys hate this endorsements idea bc you know it would be terrible for the Huskers and awesome for big media market schools like USC and UCLA. Not letting them do endorsements is dumb. The top 10-20 most famous college stars are almost always skill position players that are locks to be drafted and way more likely than not to get a second contract. Fans don’t see them as plucky young kids hoping to make it. They see them as young stars who have to buy insurance because the NFL prevents them from getting paid. That’s why you regularly see shitty stuff like Fournette and Clowney being “injured” for their last year of college and tons of dudes who are leaving for the draft skipping their bowl games. Shit have the school get a taste of the endorsements and use the university brand.

Only 20 schools make any money off football. Any move to making it a semi-pro league will see the 20-30 teams that people care about break off into their own league. College football in its current form would almost immediately disappear.

A four-conference, 32-team league, for argument’s sake, could look like this. It could be 40. It could be fewer.

Big North: PSU, OSU, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, ND

South East: UF, UGA, Tennessee, SC, FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC

South West: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, TAMU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State

the people who currently profit from college football are some of the worst people in the USA. the players are much more deserving of that money.

The worst are the people involved with the bowls.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/12/14/bowl-game-executive-pay-soaring-around-1-million/949198001/

In Atlanta, the president of the non-profit Peach Bowl, Gary Stokan, made about $684,000 in 2015, part of a deal that included first-class travel, travel for companions and social club dues. In 2005, he made about $266,000.

• In Tampa, Outback Bowl boss Jim McVay earned $993,458 in 2015, including $426,750 in bonuses. Ten years earlier, he earned about half of that. This year, his game is part of a 40-game postseason that starts Saturday and ends Jan. 8.

“Everything has grown,” longtime bowl advocate Wright Waters said of the larger college sports economy.

Such growth is fueled in large part by money from ESPN, including about $470 million a year it pays to televise the College Football Playoff format that started in 2014.

But after reaching new heights in recent years, such riches have opened these organizations to renewed criticism, especially with Congress taking aim at excessive compensation for tax-exempt businesses. It also reveals another stark contrast between the compensation earned by those who run college sports and the players who perform in them. In annual bowl games, players get a free trip and related benefits and are limited to $550 in gifts from bowl organizers, such as wrist watches and sunglasses.

“It’s completely immoral,” said Ramogi Huma, a former UCLA football player and longtime advocate for improved player benefits in college sports. “When you have that disparity and contrast it with a bowl executive director making a million dollars, when these players put their bodies on the line year-round and generate the money for that bowl game, it’s upsetting.”

brother you believe that players already receive $250k in kind - why would $10k cash on top of that ruin the sport in ways that scholarships already haven't?

They are already getting 3-5K. I don’t care if they get 10k or 20k or a graduation bonus of whatever amount. I just don’t want Bama paying $300k for an 18 year old CB.

What kind of a low-T, limp wristed manlet gets upset because college athletes don't get compensated "fairly" for their "labor" (LOL)?

It is interesting that the lib narrative has changed. It used to be the money from football needed to be redistributed to women sports. The last thing they would have promoted is paying football players. Not when the women's water polo team is chronically underfunded.

DONNA

It's not the fault of women's sports. It's the fault of football.

JOSH

It's the fault of football?

DONNA

Yeah.

JOSH

Football pays for all the other sports.

DONNA

There are 53 players on an NFL team. The Univeristy of Colorado has 130,

85 of whom are on full scholarship.

I'm all for back-ups and substitutes but can't the guy who's forth on the depth chart at right outside linebacker also be fourth on the depth chart at left outside linebacker? Ifa college football team cut back to 70 scholarships, they'd still be three deep in every position and have a fourth string punter and place-kicker. 15 scholarships. That's a wrestling team.

Josh sees Amy in the distance and gets up.

Didn't read this thread but, you guys realize most CFB players would command a tiny salary and probably their scholarships are fair market value right? Not everyone is some big 10 mvp
