I tend to think nationalizing this race was a big strategic blunder by Beto though I expect every politician in America would take that trade to get the money he’s raised. Still comparing him v Bredesen Beto seems to have done much more to fire up the other side (including the stupid kaep video) and the polls are suggesting that was an error since his momentum seems to have completely reversed after that. But it also wouldn’t surprise me if Trumptards are coming home now that the orange fuhrer has given them permission, and the polls in the summer that had big undecided numbers reflected trumptards who were still processing their residual hatred for Cruz from 2016. If Beto is smart he will run ads on every channel and website constantly for all of October with the video of Cruz getting booed at the GOP convention and saying vote your conscience. She was steady at 15-20 points down and then she started running ads making fun of Abbott for being a cripple. Also in the 4 years since that race nearly 2 million people have moved to Texas that are disproportionately liberal relative to the 2014 electorate and 750k mostly old white people died. But it all comes down to turnout. 2014 turnout was 33%. I would guess Dems need at least 40% to have any shot in this race. He's hammered Cruz hard this campaign for running for president so soon after winning a Senate seat. Which means that, if he wins, he will have to sit back and wait for a "draft Beto" movement to emerge and he'll have to enter late for the "good of the country."
If he loses, he'll still have the national profile and following he's gained this campaign, and he won't have anything else to do with his time but be a professional candidate. He can go hit Iowa and New Hampshire in January. |

Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso, leads Republican incumbent Ted Cruz by 2 percentage points among likely voters, according to an Ipsos online poll released Wednesday in conjunction with Reuters and the University of Virginia. O’Rourke has been closing the gap over the last several months, but this is the first poll that puts him ahead of Cruz.
Forty-seven percent of likely voters told Reuters they would vote for O'Rourke, while 45 percent said they would cast their ballot for Cruz. Three percent said they would vote for "Other," and 5 percent said "None." The margin of error on that portion of the poll was 3.5 percentage points.
