the q40 is great. very powerful engine, comfy if dated interior, timeless and sleek exterior styling, reliable. The q50 i think is also pretty affordable used.

trying to stick to your budget, maybe an acura tlx?

if you want reliable but a bit sportier, i really like the lexus gs though you will have to spend more than $20k for a lightly used one.

I've intentionally stayed away from the german brands.

Nice.

I bought my car new too. While I'm really happy with it, recently I've paid more attention to what is out there in the used market and I can't help but think that for the same money that I paid for one car, I could have bought 2-3 interesting used cars

On the plus side though, it's been so long that I've spent any money on cars that it wouldn't be that irresponsible of me to get a second car now

I know it sounds weird, but I'm eyeing Lexus SC 430s

https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=491617101

Journalists seemed to hate them, and it does kind of seem like a car for retirees and older divorcées... but it's kind of hard to find fault with a reliable, luxurious car with a RWD 300hp V8

Generally agree

I live where winters can be pretty ugly, so if you're going to have 2+ cars, it would be dumb to not have at least one proper SUV/crossover

My ideal mix of vehicles would be:

1 SUV/crossover for winter or trips where you need cargo space or the ability to carry more than two people

1 kinda sporty/ luxurious car for daily driving for the 8 months of the year when weather is okay. I'm partial to power retractable hardtops like the Lexus SC / Mercedes SL / BMW 4 series convertible

1 straight up sports car

What I've come to realize is that you don't exactly need to be rich to pull off a portfolio of cars like that.

They'll go to 200k with little to no repairs & I'm sure that if you look around you can find ones with less beat-up interiors, e.g.:
