Author: Alcoholic Dilemma Candlestick Maker

this was sent to the ENTIRE SCHOOL. sent at 3:40am on a Saturday night, no less.

Dennis,

I would prefer that you and I settle our differences in a less public forum. But given that you have repeatedly questioned my integrity over the class email lists-and given that I am no longer the Journal's Editor-in-Chief-I feel obliged-and entitled-to respond to you in kind.

I understand that you and other students in our law school disagree both with the Journal's decision not to withdrawal our publication offer to Kiwi Camara and the manner in which we made that decision. I tried to do the right thing in confronting this issue. You obviously think I failed, and I

admit that reasonable minds can disagree about what the proper course of action for the Journal was in this situation.

But you do not seem willing to concede this point. Instead, you have repeatedly questioned not only my competence but my character, suggesting, via your enlightening illustrations, that I am nothing short of a racist.

As far as I know, you and I have never met. And, as such, I do not know why you are confident enough in your assessment of me to continually use the panlists to malign my character.

Should you decide you are man enough to confront me in person, I am willing to meet at the time and place of your choosing to discuss our differences. Until then, I would suggest that you spare our classmates the trouble of

deleting your ad hominem attacks on me and the Journal.

My email is [redacted]. My address is [redcated]. My

phone number is [redacted]. And should it come to that point, I am willing to offer you the same choice Maureen Dowd once offered to Zell Miller: pistols or swords.

Best,

CJ

i like the "pistols or swords" ending -- it mitigates the obvious invitation to throw down in a way that makes it possible to pass the underlying menace off as a joke, while creating a situation where if dennis fails to confront him, he looks like a pussy.

The only thing crazy about this is that he referenced maureen dowd.

The letter seems perfectly straightforward, and it doesn't really matter what time they sent it out. Last time I checked, there wasn't a bell that went off whenever you received e-mail, unlike with the telephone.

Btw, why the fuck is a stupid cunt like dowd challenging people like Miller to duels (especially given that he's probably been in a few, and she'd scream like a petrified terrier at the most remote suggestion of actual violence?) He should kill her with his bowie knife just for being moronic enough to open her ugly mouth. Right after he kills matthews.

It's not really fair to call someone a douche if you haven't seen the emails that sparked CJ's response. If you are on the YLS panlists, never mind.

Personally, CJ's email makes me feel sorry for him, kinda. Like he's letting this mess drive him crazy or something; like he's cracking under the pressure. It's kinda sad.

I started with a longer explanation, but it might not be fair to speak for people who aren't here to defend themselves. So I'll just say, "Not exactly."

I will say that Dennis has actually been very proactive on this issue since December. I've never met him personally, but he is the person who wrote up a petition that several students signed asking the Journal to re-evaluate its position on publication. It's rather inaccurate to say that his attacks have been primarily directed at CJ. Other students have written in to remind CJ that the controversy was never about him, though he has obviously taken it very personally.

EDIT: And I can't say that I would take it less personally if I were in his shoes.

It basically boils down to this: If you like the Journal's decision, you support C.J. If you are agnostic, you also support C.J. If you hate the Journal's decision, you support Dennis. Or, at least, that's the way it's playing out over the panlist.

There are a number of people who are not writing in to the panlist (like me) who are fairly agnostic about the Journal's decision itself but hate the way C.J. et al. handled it. That was the entire premise of the alternative panel.

Yes, I suspect there are many marginalized voices (sorry for the pun) in the ongoing panlist debate.

Anyone who dislikes the Journal's decision needs to suck it up and stop whining. It was unquestionably the right decision.

yeah, i agree with the journal's decision, too - you know, freedom of speech, academic integrity and fairness, blah blah blah. what's funny to me is how you little white impotent faggots are characterizing the situation.

Isn't the point though that the decision was made, it was defensible (even if not the correct one), and that's it. Why is it still being discussed over various YLS lists?

agree. the joural has the right to publish what it wants to publish, and when there is doubt, it may be better in most cases to err on the side of publication. it's still being discussed because people's feelings got hurt. i mean, the last line of the email sounded like the EIC douche was challenging this Dennis guy to a duel to the death. haha good work

I haven't read any of the other emails (I don't go to YLS, clearly), but my impression was that there was a lot of discussion around this issue right up until the event, that there was an alternate event held--both were streamed on the internet--and that that was it. Are people still discussing the decisionmaking process that resulted in Camara's invite not being rescinded--or is this more personal & aimed at the former EIC specifically?

It's a little disappointing that "adults" still feel the need to bleat about their "feelings" months after the decision was made. I guess it's nice living in a bubble... until you have to face the realworld.

If you like freedom of speech, you shouldn't be defending Dennis the Terrorist. Freedom of speech does not include harassing phone calls at 2am, graffiti, profanity during classes, throwing rocks, etc.

but i'm not defending the dennis guy. and like i said, i disagree with him in principle. but saying that he should be expelled because he didn't want his school's journal to publish an article written by an alleged racist is the stupidest thing i've ever read on this site. it's like you're saying that the journal can say and do what it wants but students shouldn't be allowed to criticize the journal

Wow, this thread epitomizes what's wrong with America in the age of sound-bytes. Lots of uninformed people carrying on as if they have all of the relevant information.

Just fyi, the reason this is being discussed over the panlists is because the Journal, as it is always open to do, is accepting Letters to the Editor and has *requested* them from members of the student body. The first email in this debate was sent from a Vol. 116 Journal board member asking students attend a meeting to discuss and mold these letters in advance of publication. This particular line of emails is not referencing the Journal's decision on publication. No one is still "whining" here. We all have better things to do.

"We all have better things to do."

It honestly doesn't sound like it. This really should be a non-issue, but overly sensistive people trapped in their PC-bubbles are having their "feelings" hurt and are reaching out in order to feel "validated."

The Journal *always* asks for letters to the editor. This is just one time when people are actually writing them. It should be more common, in my view.

From the inside of the Yale Law Journal:

"CORRESPONDENCE: The Yale Law Journal invites letters in response to scholarship appearing in the Journal within the last year. Correspondence should be brief . . . . We cannot guarantee that letters received will be published. Those letters that are selected for publication will be edited with the cooperation of the author."

E-mailing pictures of lynchings is reasonable?

"Still, some law students said the Yale Law Journal -- which is widely considered to be among the top legal journals nationwide -- should not publish the article later this month. In an e-mail sent to the Law School community that was obtained by the News, Dennis Clare LAW '06 compared Camara's words to the lynchings of black Americans throughout history and attached several photographs."
