Trying to help a friend buy a car. He's looking at used Lexus and BMW.

The car he wants is a 328 wagon. He'd likely get a 2015-2016 with roughly 30k miles.

Would he be crazy to do this? Are the repairs and maintenance costs really that crazy? Also a factor is that he has an extremely short commute and only drives around 10k miles/year.

I have a Mercedes and maintenance and repairs are a bitch. The key is to buy a low mileage one (30,000 might be pushing it), and make sure he cuts bait before the big problems start. Of course, that’s difficult to know when

It depends what you are looking for. I test drove one with him and have to say it was noticeably nicer than a lexus IS or ES, and I am a big lexus fan.

I probably wouldn't get a 328 because I care mostly about performance but I do see the appeal.

Idk, $1-3k/year for an old luxury car out of warranty doesn't seem that crazy. I'd be more worried about $5-10k expenses (dead tranny, engine falls apart, differential blows, etc.).

buy it from carmax and cop their warranty plan. you can take it to any shop you want and carmax will pay for it. it's not cheap, but it's almost certainly cheaper than paying for it yourself unless you get a unicorn.

I really think the luxury car warranties are subsidized by all the warranties sold on Toyotas and the like. I got a 35k mile warranty on a Benz for around 3k with a $100 deductible. Pretty sure it’ll pay for itself the first time the sunroof or auto-adjusting side view mirror breaks.

Obviously no straight up insurance company is going to intentionally lose money, but given the rates Carmax charges something is up. See the Range Rover article.

That is true on manufacturer warranties. For example, my Jeep has a lifetime warranty with a $100 deductible that cost me under $3k. I've probably exceeded the cost already and only have like 111k miles on it and plan on keeping it for many more years as a second car. Yeah, they're subsidizing it. And it makes sense because that warranty was a primary reason I bought a Jeep.

But I don't think Carmax has any relation to any manufacturer.

that's good. they're made by japs so he'll never have to fix anything ever. BMW he'll be in the shop every week with another $2000 repair. I know a guy whose 328's wheels fell off and the car started on fire for no reason like the car in Road Trip. He didn't even jump it over a bridge.

lol you faggots rush in here with this exact same shit every time there's. no, it doesn't cost any more to maintain a fucking 3 series than it does any other shitty car. it's definitely not a "$1000+ tax" (so really like $1500). there's not even enough $1500 shit on a 3 series to fix every year if you wanted to.

i duno man. I've driven BMWs for over for like 15 years and they've been fine. parts don't cost more than any other car, tranny, suspension, etc is still fine. fucking transfer case for the AWD was really the only big thing I've ever fixed. Honda civic was probably the biggest pain in the ass out of anything though it did have a ton of miles but ppl always rant about how you can drive those things to 200K like nbd.

I agree that the downside of maintenance costs for BMWs is overstated, but you are painting a bit too rosey of a picture. Yes, BMW parts are somewhat more expensive than parts from many other manufacturers and yes, both BMW dealerships and independent repair shops that are familiar with BMWs charge a somewhat higher labor nrate than many other dealerships and shops. With that said, the difference in cost is not huge.

bmw owners are morons who take the car to dealer to get serviced. that and regular mechanics will think you either have or are stupid with money so they'll try to rip you off as well. that's the real difference. you don't have major shit breaking before 100K miles any more. mechanics know that toyota owners are broke and/or frugal so they just do the work.

I have owned a CPO 550i for 2 years. So far, it has required no maintenance beyond regular services.

When buying a BMW, it is EXTREMELY important to research the various drivetrain packages you are considering and confirm there are no known widespread issues. As a corollary to this, I would never buy a BMW with a newly designed engine within the first two years of its introduction.

If you are wondering about the basis for my warnings, I am specifically thinking about the new turbo I-6 in tje 335i (just ask Nutella) and the turbo V-8 in the 550i (this engine was especially bad), both of which were new designs that were introduced 4 or 5 years ago. The follow-up redesign of these engines have been relatively reliable.

I wasn't certain on the timeframe. I figured anyone with enough interest would be able to figure it out. But like I said, the issues with turbo V-8 are much worse than the I6. Truly terrifying.

If you're buying anything that's current generation, it shouldn't be much worse than anything else.

Almost all car makes are extremely reliable now. At least until the electronics fail.

Absolutely not, just as it has never been true. If you think a new Land Rover or Fiat is the same as a new Toyota/Lexus then you're kidding yourself. And I say this as a Jeep owner of a wk2 that has had its share of issues (but not as bad as some stories I've heard).

The spread in reliability has closed substantially. Alfas, Fiats, and Land Rovers are still the bottom of the pack, but in general you're much less likely to have problems with new cars today than 10 years ago.

i think the extended maintenance is not worth it. they will charge you a couple grand for "free maintenance" but you change oil, brakes, etc so rarely that even if it's 300-500 per it will be at least 3-4 years before it makes up for the prepaid plan

extended warranty on the other hand...like someone said above, i have had ~3k worth of repairs every year that were covered by the warranty including bad subwoofer, bad headset, bad valvetronic motor, crack/leak at the oil filter, car going into limp mode b/c of an issue with an engine cooling fan. i paid 3k for the extended warranty and it's saved me 6k easy.

of course some people never have anything go wrong with theirs, but i'd be willing to pay the 3-4k for peace of mind

and he should at least get a straight 6. whats the fun of the " ultimate driving machine" if you got a honda motor in it.

Have 2012 335i convertible. Bought it used 3 years ago. Service costs are about the same as Lexus, i.e., overpriced (wife has one). Only problem I've had is oil leaks - took three trips to get that fixed. Warranty coverage, but would have been about $1700 otherwise. Has low miles, as I only use it at the winter place. Fun car, no plans to get rid of it.
