A few reasons:

1. They are REALLY loaded and want to be with similarly loaded people for the networking opportunities.

2. Parents went to private school and want their kids to do the same

3. Single-sex education

4. Parochial education

5. For a top-level sports program

6. Don't want kids around and so send them to boarding school, but still want to live in wealthy area

that said, i can see the benefit of reasons 1-5 as it pertains to a closer day school

At least in the NYC suburbs, I've generally only seen #3 and #4, with a handful of instances of #5 (sports programs at the public schools generally suck, and sometimes the kids play a sport like ice hockey that's usually not offered at the public school). I've seen #1 once or twice. #2 and #6 seem like lighting money on fire.

I don't even know how one would be aware if that's going on in your public schools, or private schools for that matter. It's not like your kid is going to recognize that it's going on, let alone come home and bother describing it to you in any articulate way.

St. Mary's in Manhasset, NY is only 10k per year.

Delbarton seems as expensive as an elite NYC private school.

it's certainly the most upscale of the NYC all-guys catholic schools, but delbarton kids are much more similar to their peers at the other suburban catholics (chaminade, fairfield prep, etc) than they are to kids from the gay private schools in the city (dalton, collegiate, etc)

The benefits of top private schools are the social connections and not necessarily the academics. people who have loads of money can afford to pay high property taxes to live in a nice town and also $40k/year per kid to go to private school.

What's the real return on investment though? In the town in NJ I grew up in, you had one of the top public high schools in NJ, a jewish private and a handful of Catholic privates. All the kids went to the same colleges, fed into Ivies, top private schools, public ivies, etc. Perhaps it's just a status thing.

A lot of people just want to avoid public, government-run stuff as much as possible and are willing to pay for that (drive a car instead of riding the bus, play golf at a club instead of a city course, private school instead of public, etc etc)

1. Parachoial education. I like that my kindergartener can lead our family through a complete rosary as long as he has a list of which mysteries to recite and he should have those memorized by the end of the school year.

2. Better sense of discipline and decorum (seems like every kid wears athleisure to our zoned public school).

3. Minmize liberal indoctrination. At times I think our public school might not be bad but my neighborhood is full of Beto yard signs right now....

4. Virtually every parent at the school cares enough to pay tuition despite being surrounded by excellent public schools. I think the parental involvement and commitment is a big deal. I hope it translates to a higher percentage of parents keeping their kids in line.
