people don't focus enough on simply acknowledging that the 3 of a key (E in the key of C) always sounds like the 3 regardless of what key you're in. Play a I-IV-V-I cadence in C major (in major or minor, but stick with major for now) then play the E. Now play a I-IV-V-I in F major and play an A. There is something very similar about that A and the previous E. There's a '3ness' to it. It has a certain vowel sound. That sound objectively exists and while it's hard to describe beyond a sort of hard e in english sound, it exists and is learnable. This will fucking blow your mind when you start hearing these. It's a function of awareness. I can listen to a solo and say oh that lick starts on the b7 and jump right to that note if I know the key they are in (which you'll also be able to do. I can listen to a piece of tonal music and listen for an ahhh sound and lo and behold it will be the tonic).

a guy I knew from college was extremely autistic and had a rain man-style savant memory. he had perfect pitch to the extent you could literally sit on a piano making a random ~20 note cluster and he could name every note sounded from the bottom up. he did it all through cross-references (that D is the first note of sweet home alabama and the second note of some chopin nocturne and the third note of holst, etc.) all instantaneously.
