The problem as described by Bloody Shovel:

>> Any system ruled by political parties will always move to the left. Their business model is based on getting low status people to work for them. Obviously they must give them something in exchange. And they must motivate voters to vote for them. Their promise is simple: You, low status people, help us out, vote for us, obey our commands, and we will give you high status. Don’t vote for us, disobey us, let the right win, and you will remain low status. <<

Ultimately most low status people are looking for something, whether it's wlefare or a job or free education or healthcare or whatever. Politicians use spending to get votes.

I 100% agree that it's on both sides of the table. The problem, of course, is that once you get a group used to spending, they act like spoiled children once it's taken away. Medicare, for example, is a HUGE disaster, as spending on very old people in the last year of life doesn't provide much utility to a country; yet no political party will get rid of it for fear of losing votes and elections.

Rand Paul had a great line about spending in one of the GOP primary debates -- he said that spending never goes down because each side just horsetrades for the spending that benefits them, which just results in double the spending.

The IQ jibes do a lot to support your position.

Obama came into office during a recession and pushed necessary deficit side stimulus. These are not comparable situations.

Now would be the time to reduce the deficit not grow it. This ideological choice by the GOP will leave us in a very challenging situation when the recession hits.

If you really don't know, you should spend less time insulting me and more time educating yourself. These are basic facts every American should understand.

It's impossible to say without seeing how the legislative process plays out. History would be a better guide.

The GOP has always talked about fiscal responsibility and never practiced it and have been significantly more fiscally irresponsible than Dems. I don't see any reason to think this would not continue, especially not with the utter capture of GOP leadership by GC.

it's almost like a very significant portion of the budget goes to the military and to medicare/SS, which the boomers who make up large chunks of the republican base support.

they can pay for whatever they like. or they can advocate to create a charitable organization that helps pay.

sorry, but we should not use public money to pay for meds for an 85 year old. if we're gonna spend on medical care do it for kids. it's cheaper and it at least serves the public and the contry's future.

Amusing to see just how little conservatives actually care about the deficit when they are in power.

They just double the deficit, blame libs for it, and the base eats it up.

I don't really see any conservatives raising it. What makes you say conservative voters care about this? Xo conservatives sure don't.

This is what happens when politicians use spending to win votes. People get used to the spending and then politicians run on more spending. It's a shit cycle.

It naturally goes up every year there is economic growth. The current estimated revenue is actually on the low end by historic standards (revenue is only 16% of GDP and need about 20% to keep deficit from increasing).

Your constituency isn't serious about cutting spending because they want the spending. It's been that way since WWII. Given the public's actual position on spending (not some horseshit posturing) the optimal level for tax revenue is probably higher than it is now. When we're not in a recession the deficit shouldn't be growing more than gdp.

When we're not in a recession the deficit should be growing far less than GDP. Simply growing at GPD isn't sustainable because you know they'll be bigger when the country does hit recession. But you simply cannot shrink deficits sustainably without cutting spending drastically. No amount of higher taxes will fix this.
