PARIS (AFP) -

Life expectancy in 2040 is set to rise at least a little in all nations but the rankings will change dramatically, with Spain taking the top spot while China and the United States trade places, researchers said Wednesday.

With a projected average lifespan of nearly 85.8 years, Spain -- formerly in 4th place -- will dethrone Japan, which sits atop the rankings today with a lifespan of 83.7 years, and will drop to 2nd place in 2040.

In a shift that will be seen by some to reflect a superpower changing-of-the-guard, the world's two largest economies effectively swap positions compared to 2016: in 2040 the US drops from 43rd to 64th (79.8 years), while China rises from 68th to 39th (81.9 years).

yeah i'm convinced that the secret to long life is not doing anything you don't want to do. not waking up earlier than you want, not doing a stressful job that you hate, not married to someone you hate, etc.

I'm convinced the key is balance. having a reasonable amount of work/chores to give your life purpose, having a reasonable amount of off time to rest, having a reasonable amount of "fun" time to do things that are solely for the purpose of having a fun experience and nothing else. it's easy to fall into a routine of one or the other, but it's important to keep balance as much as possible.

this. most areas with high life expectancies are generally coastal areas: Japan, Mediterranean, etc.

I think every other facet of their society offsets the horrendous work culture, i.e: excellent diet, healthier lifestyles, strong family connections, strong social protections, social cohesion, etc.

Other than Karoshi victims, it balances out.

They have a caste based society. Everyone has their "niche". The work expectations are often performative, it's not like they have to think about 7.6 and 9.2 for 16 hour days.

A yuge factor in this is infant mortality, and different countries count dead babbies differently. "Stillborns" were never alive, after all.

I also wonder if mom's age is a factor, too, what with moms in lots of industrialized having kids so late, leading to more health problems. Maybe Spain still has lots of heroic 23 yo moms
