but then they built a bunch of dams for hydropower and decided it would be too expensive to build locks for ships, so now the furthest you can go upriver is to a town called yankton at the far southeastern corner of south dakota. but nobody really does, because what's the point, and yankton doesn't really have ship facilities anyway.

ships developed their own culture and casts of characters, many of whom basically made their livelihoods on those ships, with the destinations not being as important. card dealers/tricksters, traveling salesmen, whores, US military recruiters, sales agents for companies in river towns (especially land sales and mining claims), scam artists, itinerant journalists, all sorts of grifters, etc. this was during america's expansion phase when the west was still being filled out, and "opportunity" could (and very often DID) strike overnight.
