introspection, non conformity with braindead Chad and Stacy lifestyle, passionate adherents, good music that tries to express the message of doom facing genetic and cultural trash (90% of the population)

I’m talking about the generation that bears the blame for emo culture, not necessarily the generation in which emo culture peaked which is obviously millennials. I thought maybe Gen X paved the way. They were mopey as shit

1000% yes. Anyone disagreeing is essentially making an equivalent argument to: the California pop punk sound was invented in 1994 when Green Day released Dookie. You millennial rednecks may not have been aware but there were post-punk/indie rock bands in the late 80s and 90s who built the entire genre before the major labels ever got a hold of it, and then it broke out and major labels started to push it initially in the mid-90s with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate. It was unquestionably a genre invented by Gen X mainly in reaction to 15 years or punk and metal being the dominant rock subcultures of the late 70s up to Nirvana.

Rites of Spring/Embrace is more of a debate and they are really John the Baptists of emo, but if there is no discussion of Promise Ring’s significance in the invention and early stages of the emo genre in your response to the question prompt, the exam grader is likely to give you a failing score for this question. HTFH.

The 90s were a shit time in retrospect. Memories get clouded by nostalgia, and nostalgia is most strongly tied to adolescence. While you were enjoying TMNT and being the last generation to ride bikes after school the older Gen X shitheads were laying the seeds of our destruction

blame modernity

it is a gift of time to be able to luxuriate in one’s emotions, even if they are dark or blue

It wasn't hipster music. It's very adolescent and if you weren't a teenager when you first heard it, you wouldn't like now.

it was always ljl to me how the stacies in HS would listen to pop-punk/emo. but back then they would all say they liked "everything but rap and country" and pop/top40 radio didn't offer them compelling alternatives to 50 cent and ludacris.

seeing say anything at warped tour was peak experience though

People who say they like everything but rap and country are invariably horrible.
