im working with a 20k budget - looking at a 2006 Cayman S 987C with 60k miles for 20k. inspection is all clean

pretty much all the porsches im looking at are around $18-20k which seems to be the market rate for 15 yr old porsches regardless of the model

the 911s im looking at are the shitty ones you guys told me not to get - the early 2000s 996 and 964s

Depends on a million factors.

Low rent/mortgage (let's say $2500 or less all-in on housing each month), no student loans, and kids in public school? Maybe $200k HHI for the Cayman and $300k for the 911.

Adjust accordingly if you have more expensive housing costs, school costs, etc.

But they don’t depreciate anywhere near as much as luxury cars. You also don’t need to run the most expensive tires and lol at paying dealer service prices. They don’t need much for service and, while somewhat more expensive than your average car, it’s not crazy.

False.

1) Carrera S with sports chrono is a ton of fun when you do launch control.

2) Carrera actually has usable backseats if you have little kids.

3) The back grill (until the 991 George Foreman grill variant) looks sweet.

4) Aesthetically, the side profile of the Carerra is a work of art. The Cayman looks good from angles but looks odd when viewed directly from the side.

5) Rear-engine / RWD makes for fun drifting and power-slides, if you like that sort of thing.

But a Cayman S is a really cool car, and having the engine right behind you is also a thrill. A two-seater definitely feels more like a "cockpit" of a sports car than the relatively cavernous and comfortable Carrera cabin, which is really more of a GT cruiser now than a pure sports car.

FYI, the best car Porsche ever made (for mere mortals) is the Boxster Spyder. I am obviously excluding exclusive models like classic Porsches (907, 918, Carerra GT, GT3RS etc.) from that discussion.

1) I didn't say 911s aren't fun. Cayman with sport chrono is a blast too.

2) Fair, if you need more than 2 seats, that is a reason to go with the 911.

3) Cayman aesthetically better than 911 from every angle.

4) Cayman aesthetically better than 911 from every angle.

5) Drifting is harder than it looks. I did the drift class at the Porsche Experience Center in a GT3, and it's hard to imagine getting the rear out in a controlled manner on public roads, especially below the GT3 level.

Let me give you a quick jump starter guide.

Get into a large parking lot that's empty.

Turn off all traction control, get into sport mode and start the sport chrono and hold it. As you release, make sure you stay in 2nd gear and simultaneously jerk the steering in one direction while maintaining high RPMs by pumping the throttle (don't just hold it down).

You'll find yourself in a donut.

Once you're able to maintain the donut, then start moving your steering slightly to center, before moving it back left (or right). You'll notice that your donuts are getting bigger, instead of merely pivoting on your front two wheels.

Once your donut is making large circles, you're drifting.

Like I said, I took the course on it and was able to do it. Donuts like you are describing are way easier than what I had in mind, which was drifting through a hairpin corner at speed. It took a lot of practice in the GT3 to get it right. Front engine, rear wheel drive is a much easier setup for that sort of thing.

Still, maintaining a donut drift would be difficult in a base Carrera or Carrera S on a dry surface, even with traction control off.

You can get a low-mileage 997 for $35k-$50k, and a 981 for around $40K (under 30,000 miles).

So these are affordable to purchase. The problem is in maintenance and repair, as maintenance and repair costs are the same as a new car worth $70-100K, and if you're out of warranty, LJL.

-Check out how much tires and brake pads cost. Oh, if you get a flat, since your Porsche can't carry any spares, you need to call a speciality flatbed tow truck (since the cars are low) and have it shipped to the Porsche dealer, since your local tire shop doesn't carry the unique tire sizes that go on a Porsche. Have fun paying out the nose for parts and labor.

-There's a little bit of snow on the ground? LOL! Enjoy buying (and paying to store) 4 sets of winter tires and swapping them back and forth every season.

-Oil changes LJL. OK, a 911 oil change is simple enough but good luck with the Cayman!

-Random broken stuff like a broken headlight. LOL! At least $1,000 to replace, since they can't just swap out the bulb they have to do the entire unit. Yeah yeah you can buy used parts and DIY, but assuming you don't have the tools or knowledge, LOL!

-Major repairs - LOL!!!!!

Owning a Porsche is a major commitment. You really have to learn about these cars and how to properly maintain them, which costs money to do. You can't just treat it like a BMW and get by just doing your basic scheduled service and calling AAA if you get a flat.

Other than GT cars and PCCB ceramic brakes, brake parts are available inexpensive, but good aftermarket and there are now good Porsche sized tires in the $250 each price range for most sizes. Common failure/maintenance parts are available OEM not from Porsche reasonably priced (coils, plugs, suspension parts etc.). Oil changes are harder, but nothing ridiculous. Brake fluid every two years is annoying, but $150 is about what an independent charges.

Body parts/headlights etc. and replacement engines are expensive.

They are not much worse than a BMW or Merc honestly.

I was rocking 20" wheels and no, cheap $250 tires don't belong on a sports car.

If you do track days (why wouldn't you if you owned a Porsche), you're regularly swapping out brake pads, fluids, oil and tires. It becomes a very expensive hobby very quickly.

It got to the point where I put my 20" wheels in storage and bought a set of 18" wheels just for track. That was also retardedly expensive since Porsche has a weird wheel size.

The 20in sizes are the ones where you can get good tires inexpensively now.

Tracking frequently is another ballgame.

Maybe not your rural Big O, but it's not a problem elsewhere.

A well-optioned 718 Cayman S is very close in price to a base 991.

How so? For most people, the Porsche will be a 2nd or weekend car.

Let's say you have $100K to spend. That puts you in 911 territory, but you honestly may enjoy the 781 S more than a base 991. I know I would.

As a multiple Porsche owner, they attract young boys and old men. If you want a woman, drive a Range Rover or G-wagen
