So I've been reading greentexts on r/greentext lately, and in my own mind I've lately noticed a disturbing trend.

It's not that I've become racist, or homophobic, or anything like that. My ideals have not been changed by 4chan's unrelenting toxic garbage ideology.

What's happened is that I've come to see my comrades with an overly critical eye. One of my good friends who happens to be a radical leftist and non-binary has pink hair and is overweight. Now, when I see them, a little voice in my head goes, "The neckbeards over at 4chan would absolutely ridicule this person. They're part of where the "fat feminist" stereotype comes from". Or for another example, I was in a meeting for a community organisation and we started talking about trigger warnings. Hearing the phrase made me cringe internally- not because i'm opposed to protecting people from PTSD and the like, but because I couldn't help feeling how effectively the fascists use this sort of thing to make us look bad in the public eye. Ditto such words as "safe space" and "privilege"- I know what they mean, and I understand why they're important, but that little voice in my head planted by greentexts has forced me to adopt a sort of double consciousness about it.

It's like internalised bigotry. It makes me insecure about my own advocacy, and it makes me a less effective leftist. It makes it a little harder for me to participate in leftist discourse, because I can see how they would see everything I'm saying (and that others are saying) as ridiculous.

Now that I've become aware of the problem in my head and properly articulated it, I can attack it. But it should be known that, even if you don't think it could ever possibly affect you, fascist propaganda (and propaganda in general) works on everyone, in varying degrees.

To clarify for some of you out there, I'm not saying that you shouldn't consider other views. I've seen the other side's arguments, and I've seen the rational refutations of them. What I'm more concerned about here is attitudes that I've unconsciously picked up. I'm not worried about a reasoned critique of the left, as I've seen plenty of those, both from the left and the right. I'm worried about being unable to not see my comrades as material for videos with titles like "TRIGGERED FAT SJW FEMINIST SNOWFLAKES - CRINGE COMPILATION". That's how the fascist virus spreads: through feelings and distorted lenses, not through rational critiques and analysis.
