The oscillation between humor and horror doesn’t work—they undercut each other, making most of the fun parts seem vaguely distasteful and take the sting out of the thrilling parts (compare to, say, Poltergeist, where Spielberg nails the balancing act. Same with CEIII)

The lack of CGI meant the cast had to actually be capable of acting, rather than letting the special effects do all the heavy lifting (even though the special effects were groundbreaking for the time)
