If I was seriously trying to make a run at a mile/5k PR, I would work my way up to like 35-40 miles per week (slow, endurance pace) before I started to incorporate any type of real speed work into my training. You have give your tendons and ligaments the chance to build up before you go to hard. Skipping building up your base is how people get hurt...

I actually am much more well suited to endurance sports.

I have the gene that makes my fast-twitch muscles less effective, but my slow twitch more efficient.

Probably would have been quite good at cross country.
