This is biglaw vs. non biglaw alternatives, right? Assuming so, here it goes:

Paycheck. Never not gotten a raise. Also get bonus every year.

Mostly prole-free environment (at least co-workers, plenty of prole secretaries).

The one good thing about billable hours is that it is NBD to run out to a doctor's appointment or haircut if you need to. Can always make it up later.

Get all Jewish holidays off even if not Jewish.

Working on cases that end up in the newspaper is nice compared to working on cases that nobody cares about.

Good employee benefits (health insurance, etc.).

Clients don't haggle over bills.

Support staff can actually be helpful. Have on-site reprographics people, trial support, marketing, etc.

DAT seamless and black car policy.

Business class airfares if going coast to coast.

i've had clients where you can bill "research relating to back-end facility; prepare initial draft of credit agreement, 11.9" and others that demand that every task be accounted for. oddly, sometimes the former are more cost-sensitive and the latter are willing to pay a ton so long as they can go through the exercise of pretending to care. but the guy is flame, as his follow-up bait shows

Paycheck obv.

Generally can make my own schedule. I take two hours at lunch to go to the gym everyday and no one bothers me about it if it doesnt affect my work (it doesnt)

I get to rack up a lot of travel miles in my current role which cuts down on vacation expenses. All travel is business class.

Thats about it

The single best thing about it is that you realize no one is really all that smart or talented that they bend the world to their will on sheer ability. Maybe a very seldom few, but almost everyone in law or finance got to a high station through some amount of good timing/luck. I gather this is not the case in truly IQ-intensive fields, but it's definitely true of white collar work, including engineers (in some way especially with engineers/programmers because their mechanism sorts specifically for extroversion and social skills in a corporation despite the fact that everything prior to the Director level going back to high school does the opposite). Once you get comfortable with that idea it makes a lot of the rest of your path in life tolerable, though oftentimes still maddening when you see relatively dumb people do well/get money. It also means that over the long term my persistently striverish friends and classmates are held back because they will never absorb this idea, and will look more and more autistic and annoying as their careers progress.

This wasn't something I fully learned and absorded while I was still in biglaw, but it's something I've eventually gained by moving up the ranks at my in-house megacorp gig, and have had many conversations about it with friends who stayed in biglaw and made partner and they report the same feeling. And it actually helps to go in-house and see these big name partners as outside counsel when they are in full ass-kissing mode and you as the customer get to see the discussion evaluating their work and the cost of it.

No you should bill your balls off, but realize that it may be overlooked and that's not the end of the world and you can find your way to something better one way or another. And certainly do looksmax, but not for biglaw (LOL). Looksmax to deal with life in the Tinderocracy hypergamy reality that is 2018.

Nothing I loved about biglaw, but one thing people don’t appreciate is how (almost) everyone is smart and professional. Yes lots of people are assholes, but I can only think of a few people either in your own firm or opposing/co-counsel who are straight up dumb. In house, you deal with a lot of dumb people, because they are not in legal or other white collar/professional areas, either within your own company or at service providers. These people don’t understand deadlines or being responsive or understand any concepts outside of doing the same 5 things they always do.

Another thing good about biglaw is that it’s not a bad network to have and it does give you credibility and have resume value even after you leave, assuming you stick around in a career where things like that matter.

Guy above says nobody is “that smart.” That doesn’t mean they aren’t smart at all. Not getting not an aspie discussion about degrees of intelligence. I don’t think you understand that your average officer worker literally has no analytical abilities whatsoever. They just do the work they’re told without understanding why. Your average biglaw associate understands the issues and strategies and doesn’t require tons of explanation to complete tasks and “get it.” That requires a certain level of intelligence and professionalism. I work with people who are “experts” at implementing Dodd Frank and they have no idea what any of the legislation means or the purpose behind it. It can be quite frustrating.

The people have bad personalities but at least they aren't dumb. I'm not surrounded by 110 IQs like in nearly any other professional workplace.

When I wrote the above I didn't read any of the answers yet. A lot of others also seem to value this - having smart people around you.
