As a tourist Xinjiang is actually a fun place. Certainly very different from the rest of China. You can go from Turpan (recommended place to visit) to Urumqi (where you fly in) in one hour on high speed rail.

when did you go? it's apparently not a "fun place" anymore, and it's a total police state and people dont leave their houses anymore. we almost went to kashgar and turpan, but we punted bc it seems miserable. i think the ship sailed on xinjiang long ago.

I went before the detention centers. That actually makes it a more interesting sounding destination.

sure, if you could visit them. but the detention centers are secret. all you'll see in kashgar is people afraid to leave their house, apparently.

That's still something to see, few people on streets and being watched. Also 180.

There is more to a good high speed rail system than hundreds of miles of tracks to nowhere.

its obviously japan. china has built an impressive system in recent years but it still doesnt measure up to japan. plus, at the end of the journey, youd much rather be in wherever you are in japan 10 times out of 10 than anywhere in PRC
