wtf are you talking about small group? this was a 7-person shabbat dinner at a friend's house. this isn't a big 200-person dinner at a synagogue and someone brought a bottle of fancy scotch to share with their friends.
it's shitty and tacky for some guy to bring something to a 7-person meal that only he and the host drink. the host looked really embarrassed and felt awkward about it.

They were like “oh nice!” and instead served yellowtail Shiraz. To me that was blatant hoarding. |
