I just tested mine yesterday and came in at about 26 inches completely untrained. I do squats and deadlifts, but nothing that involves any running or jumping . . . I literally wouldn't have jumped at all in months. I'm thinking I want to dunk a basketball, which would require me to get into the low/mid 30s at 5'11, so this is the plan:

-lose the last 7-10 lbs on my cut to get shredded. Should be good for an inch or more

-my calves are weak and entirely untrained. It wouldn't be unrealistic for them to get 50-75% stronger in the next 3-6 months. Based on jumping with completely straight legs to see how much calves contribute to my vertical, it seems like I could pick up ~3 inches from this

-I would guess that in the next couple of weeks, I can probably add 2-3 inches just from jumping around a little bit. Getting some quick gains on an untrained movement is pretty easy just from better mechanical efficiency and muscle fiber activation

-based on the above, I should be able to get into the low 30s with relative ease. If some intensive plyometric training is able to add another 3 inches, get ready for me to throw the fuck down on all of u.

Yeah I have a torn ACL too. I hadn't jumped at all for the longest time because it was just embarrassing and depressing. My lifts were shit too because the knee was always sore and popping/rubbing on itself/tracking wrong in the days after I'd squat or deadlift heavy. Eventually I just decided to run the fucker into the ground and see what would happen, and kept lifting heavy rather than resting it when it seemed risky. That actually made it much better and my lifts exploded. One day I randomly decided to try to jump and found that I could slap the backboard, which was about 6-8 inches higher than I expected to get.

Touched rim tonight, not the lip that hangs down lower, actually got my fingers just over the top of it.

Was just doing my normal jump training inside, actually doing worse than my last session, when suddenly I busted out a jump like two inches higher than my prior max and touched something way above what I was aiming for. Came down yelling like Vince Carter after that olympic dunk, then ran outside all gakked up and surprisingly got the rim first try.

I'm a few weeks behind where I should be due to some minor injuries (small tear where hamstring intersects glute from lifting, tight/strained calf from jump training) and also just getting jammed up with work. But I'm healed up and progressing again

I can now pull the rim down from a no-step flat jump. Today on my best one-step attempt, I cleared the rim with a tennis ball but didn't let go of it and it got stuck on the inside of the rim and I pulled it back out. My running vertical is actually lower than my one-step right now due to an awkward approach angle on my driveway and just the fact that I don't have the step tempo down to launch perfectly yet. Hopefully mastering that gives another 2-3 inches.

I am still on a cut so my squat has been flat this whole time and I haven't been able to train as often due to shit recovery. Working with like 215x5 which is a fucking joke. That will easily skyrocket to 315x5 when I start eating. With 8lbs of muscle and 120 extra lbs of max squat that should get me into the high 30s.

After a really brutal couple of months where I strained my non-dominant quad and patella tendon due to lack of rest from trial prep and driving long distances/sitting in meetings all day getting sore, I finally had a strong session and got back to roughly where I was before.

I changed my shoes about halfway through (after I had already lost an inch or two off my best jumps), and probably gained back an inch and a half from it. Going from old slightly squishy running shoes to extremely firm basketball shoes made a huge difference on force transfer. I'm probably up to a standing 30 inch jump when fresh now.

I would imagine I'm going to be able to throw down a mini-basketball in the next few weeks with all conditions perfect. A real ball seems possible in a few months. Right now I'm a bit gimped because my running jump isn't higher (maybe even lower) than my standing jump. Did a little research and the strained quad/patella tendon likely killed my ability to transfer force from a deceleration. Tonight was the first night that it even felt right at all to do a running max vert. I may have a free 2-3 inches already baked in that will come when my technique is back up to par.

I will poast a video to style on you fucks when I pull this off . . .when I come down from the dunk I'll pop a diamond cutter sign, there will be no debate.
