This is why you get a true wreck to start out on. My last house was so awful that even when I did a mediocre job it was a massive improvement. As a result I never had to redo anything even when it wasn't great. Now that I have a nice house, I've learned from my mistakes.

I get it. I was like that for a while but electrical is actually pretty easy/paint by numbers. And unlike finish work, requires no actual skill. People are just afraid of it because it's electrical.

You can rid yourself by doing some reading. YouTube is great for step by step directions but doesn't always explain what is going on. Get good book from Home Depot or wherever and read it all the way through and you'll feel more confident. It's really not a huge deal.

I totally agree on a project by project basis. But if you want to learn the ins and outs of residential wiring so you are comfortable before diving in, a little reading will probably help with your confidence in that regard. Then For whatever your project is find a YouTube video on point.

this was my last project, installing lights under the eaves of my house. before it was too dark at night

https://i.imgur.com/UhwhL3x.jpg

had someone run the electrical but i cut the plywood to size, nailed it in, patched holes & sanded, caulked, then painted and sealed. it was a ton of work. connected it to an astronomical timer and lights turn on automatically at sunset and turn off at sunrise. it was probably my favorite project to date.

Honestly, if your house is a dump, do it yourself.

But I hate going to a friend's nice house and seeing a garbage DIY just knowing someone will re-do it in 5-10 years. This is a disaster created by HGTV and Youtube.

I needed my bathroom tiled, and I got the best tilers in the state to put it on mud and wire lathe. It is solid as a rock and will last 100 years and every centimeter is perfect.

hard to disagree with this, but what do you do if your house isn't a dump but isn't particularly "nice"

in which case you probably can't afford the "best tilers in the state"

are the shitty contractors that much better than a motivated DIYer? doubtful

Yeah, that's fair. The cost isn't always worth it. The really skilled trades are just really hard to DIY well. Amateur tiling and finish carpentry always look terrible.

There are lots of areas that are not as skilled, like painting, wood finishing, sheetrocking, framing, that you can learn well enough to DIY. I still see people DIY these and skip steps with terrible results however.

The yuppies who buy your house in 10 years will think the tile is ugly and rip it all up

I feel as if the past couple of generations were never taught DIY skills.

Would be great to see a return of them as part of the revived masculinity of America

Fixed up a 70s house that was in rough shape. New bathrooms, kitchen, replace every door, all floors, all lighting, ton of drywall repair, painted every surface, replaced all crawl space flex ducts from plenums to registers, all new plugs and switches. Has taken close to two years, though slowed down a lot the second year after main living areas were done. It’s been enjoyable but nothing like the flipper shows. Also welded up a 22X25 A frame car port. Next project will be a deck.

Some tools...

I'll learn how to do all this shit when I retire. Terrible use of time for me to spend hours on shit over the weekend, and doing a comparatively shitty job, after wagecucking all week and doing more wagecucking on the weekend too. Sucks but that's the striver wagecuck life.

Theres too much red tape with obtaining permits and there is always asbestos that adds ~$2-5k to any remodel

You can DIY asbestos removal. No big deal. $5 a bag to drop at the dump.

The key thing is to do what you can without a permit so you don’t get hit with property tax increases.

We're getting rains in LA so we discovered a motherfucking roof leak. Home warranty will cover only the primary damage (up to a limit of $1000 hehe) so we're on our own for the damage to our plaster walls. I'm assuming I can cut the section and just drywall it? Or do I have to find somebody to plaster?
