Worked at agency DURING law school, went to a firm for two years, then moved back to a quasi-legal, quasi-regulatory/policy, quasi-senior advisor gig in the agency where I previously worked. Got lucky and had connections up the ass. I'm a GS-15, step 10.

I come in at 10am and leave at 3-5pm, depending on the day, and work from home Thursday and Fridays.

Think I can jump to a consulting or business role in a smaller metro area in a few years, so this should pay off, but I wouldn't be unhappy here forever.

Believe it or not, I still actually go into work now every few days. For the most part I am just fucking around.

I just had leverage, they wanted exactly my experience and knew me and said they'd offer me as much as possible

Connections are helpful, I must admit, but for random generic bigfed things you can prob get it without connections

OPM decides what step you come in at and you can't get more than 1 step increase per year.

what is GS15 salary?

is it true some fed workers are not *allowed* to come into work during shutdown?

Step 10 is like $155k in DC, lower in other regions.

Furloughed workers can't work because that would be an unlawful augmentation of agency funds. It's actually a separation of powers of issue - executive branch isn't supposed to do shit except what Congress authorizes/funds it to do. If Congress didn't give you money to do the work, and it didn't authorize you to use some other source of funding, the implication is that Congress doesn't want you doing the work.

Except most agencies are now completely disregarding the anti deficiency act and having non essential employees work on stuff outside of the exceptions.
