And it’s hilarious when you realize how much lawyers are brought in and relied upon to just do common sense critical thinking. Like it’s amazing how many times the business people want to do something that arguably creates legal risk but is much more likely to just piss off customers and drive them into the arms of the competition. And when you point this out it’s immediately clear that they all got caught up in group think and/or are just mindlessly following a bad instruction from an uninformed manager who misunderstood basic facts.
And the inverse is just as common with other groups, where they are like “we can’t ever do that because sometimes we might have to do something else” and you point out “let’s just write it to say it will be one or the other and we choose” and their minds are blown that you came up with this.
I also always laugh at how when HR or Finance reorgs the business shrugs but if they like you as their lawyer and you get a chance to move up elsewhere they get pissed and worried that your backfill will be some autistic freak. |

It began slow motion imploding within six months after I got there as a first year despite lots of bullshit reassurance to the contrary during OCI, 2L summer and 3L year. It ceased its existence 18 months after I got there and I was not invited to go with the partners and associates in my group that went to a different firm in town. I switched markets and got to my second firm, which was a v25 or so, in the fall of 2007 and was Latham'd in 2009. But on top of that I was pretty clueless/autistic about firm politics and wasn't a particularly good junior associate, so I didn't give myself any real chance to be saved at either place. I don't think I would've lasted more than another year at my first firm if it had been normal. I didn't demonstrate any interest or motivation to be liked or get good at being a securities lawyer because it was boring as shit. I did M&A at second firm, and that was better, but I wasn't gunnerish enough to really get noticed and taken under the wing of anyone who mattered. I might've been able to survive if I had picked the second best firm I got an offer from in 2007 bc they barely laid anyone off in 2009. But I bounced back to a fake boutique that paid like shitlaw in are country in late 2009 and got megacorp inhouse after a year and have hung on for dear life ever since.
