explain how you make that amount and still feel poor and can't save for retirement.

you are either living very extravagantly (even in NY)

or

you are saving for retirement

there is no way you're not doing either.

Real answer: our standards are too high. You don’t “need” $5m to retire just like I don’t “need” $10m to retire with 2 kids.

We just have those standards as living a comfortable (not luxurious) life without having financial worries but that keeps edging up as you make more.

That's crazy. We live in LA, have a very good quality of life, and basically live off my wife's income of 140K. Our mortgage is paid off but that would only have added another 40k in expenses a year. If you don't spend like an idiot you can have a nice life for 200K in virtually any city. Even with kids. The trick is don't marry a woman who shops. My wife doesn't buy shit.

think about the 1970s where $300,000 was like $3mm today.

it's not hard to imagine that your $4.4 million is worth only $400k in REAL DOLLARS by the time you retire.

that is fine if ur living stingy for 10 years but god forbid u live to 80+ years old.

OP, it’s tough to do in NYC but basically you need to either drastically cut rent or spending to save meaningfully. Assuming you net $200-250k after taxes and $50k goes to rent, you can’t be going around spending $4k/mo on other shit even if it’s easy to do so.

yes exactly.

i'm literally doing what u are saying, spending average $4k a month on random shit. it's always something. one month i do really well and then next month my laptop breaks and i spend $2k on a new one.

next month i get an iphone upgrade. then it's 2 people's birthdays so I spend $200 on food and drinks and going out. then every year there's a $10k vacation or bottles for NYE. always something going on.

Yeah I get it. $4k/mo on various shit isn’t outrageous at that income level. You can cut back like $1-2k/mo and save an extra $20k/year. But that just means you get to retire in 28 years instead of 30 or whatever. Also if you get married and have kids, there’s childcare and private school tuition which is way more costly than NYE trips. Early retirement is really designed for people who make a few million/year.

My goal is $10m NW for retirement and id be lucky retiring around 55.

My kids are going to Calabasas High so no need to pay for private school. Once they are out of daycare, my expenses for kids will be basically just food, clothes, and video games. Wife and I will each gift them each 150K for their 529 this year (you can front load 5 years) and then their college will be completely funded.

Your situation is unique in that you can live in a cheaper area with good schools. I can’t live in commuting distance of work if I moved to the valley for the schools, and my LAUSD options for public school are areas with $3m houses.

I think what OP is addressing though is not that he can’t live comfortably off $300k but that he’s not saving meaningfully such that he can retire early. I don’t think you can dispute that. You live off your wife’s salary which ends up being $6-7k/mo post tax without a mortgage. We are roughly at around $10k/mo after mortgage so we are around the same spending. OP isn’t really deviating greatly from that when spending $4k/mo not married. I don’t think he’s being a spendthrift.

The difference though is that you can retire early because you make so much more money. Last year we saved $300k/year but even then it’ll take 15-20 years of working to get to where we want to be. If OP is saving $100k/year, it’ll take even longer. He can cut back here and there and save $125k/year instead but that doesn’t shave meaningful years off working.

A lot of variables here. $400-500k as a single guy vs. $400-500k as HHI (what we have), do you have kids, what does rent/mortgage look like, etc. Same with $300k/year - that's fine to live on as a single guy even in NYC/SF/LA. I definitely can't imagine living on $300k/year HHI with a decent house, kids, etc. in an expensive coastal city.

Are you renting it out or what? When you say "another city" - is it a suburb of NYC or a totally different city you want to relocate to?

This seems to be the single expense that breaks the budget.

Borrowing isn't free money anymore. My last car (bought in 2013) was financed at under 2% (less than inflation). This car I was offered 3.5% and just paid cash.

In general, at his salary borrowing against assets doesn't seem prudent.

it's not so much that it's free money but he said he was cash poor (and on at least one significant asset that had increased substantially in value)

if u're able to extract cash from ur non-cash assets without significant transx costs and while avoiding tax consequences (as exeunt pointed out) it's worth considering

i'm certainly cash poor in that 99+% of my net worth is tied up in equities, RE, insurance, etc. but i wouldn't feel "cash poor" bc i have access to margin loans, HELOCs, policy loans, etc.

It is, but I keep my cars for a long time. Paying interest on it seemed pointless when I had the cash. Markets are uncertain now so saving 3.5% seemed like a good way to go.

at that level of income in nyc you interact with lots of people who make multiples or even magnitudes of what you make so your baseline level of spending is skewed massively upward. just from what you wrote you clearly blow money on all kinds of crap that don't add meaningfully to your happiness.

If you are going to prioritize last minute NYE trips with models and bottles and dropping $1-2K per month on a GF, then expect to feel "cash poor" until your income drastically increases. But given the type of person you are, I'm sure your spending will still outpace whatever you earn.

Welcome to modern day consumerism bro.
