Every once in a while I check out the Goldeneye speedrunning forum (the elite Goldeneye) to watch their videos and read some of their discussions. I still pick up the game every 6 months or so to try to beat my best times. These guys have spent years mapping out the game's code and physics and working on other "mysteries" (how to get this guard to face in this direction at precisely this time). These guys are doing things that the game designers would have never even thought of, all in the pursuit of breaking a meaningless time record.
It is actually incredibly amazing to see how cooperation, engineering, and trial and error work to achieve things that were considered impossible (they call it "pushing the game to its limits"). There is no possible way a single person playing the game for their entire life could come up with all of the most efficient strategies for each level. They'd be utterly hopeless. I've never worked for a tech or engineering firm, but I guess this is how things are invented and perfected over time. It's actually fun to watch.
They refer to "trial and error" as "grinding out a time." Guys who are creative are "strat" (short for strategy) guys. |

These glitches often require inputs on a specific frame, with perfect sub-pixel placement.
It gets crazy when there's randomness involved that can kill an otherwise perfect run, when it takes hundreds of excellent runs to even get to the point where you attempt to exploit a glitch, which might take many tries to pull off, and the record holder did in on like their third try. The best runners do thousands of runs and get the whole thing down to muscle memory, there's plenty of videos of them doing blindfolded runs. |
