Think I have settled on this Yamaha inverter generator:

https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/generator/models/ef3000iseb

Enough to easily start our refrigerator, as many LED lights as I want, a couple TVs, and a computer, while still not constituting a fortune.

Which generator?

There is no way you bought a Honda or Yamaha inverter generator for that little, even if it was beat to shit.

No it was not Honda or Yamaha. Who cares? It was a “husky” powered by a Briggs and Stratton engine. 5K watts and 6250 starting watts. Ljl at dumping 2K into a generator.

Ljl at dumping anything into anything containing an American company's Chinese made engine. The worst possible combination

On a slightly more serious note, all inverter generators are not the same. Some of the Chinese generators produce a SPS sine wave, while others produce a good sine wave. Given the intended purpose, I have no roblem with spending some extra cash to ensure I get a quality product.

Obviously.

If I am going to buy a generator to maintain heat, I might as well get one that will have no issues with powering our refrigerator, while still being sufficiently light that I can lift it into the back of an SUV or truck.

I have 2 and the last time we had an outage neither worked. Basement flooded because the sump pump wasnt on. Had a friend drive across town in the middle of the night with a generator and about 10 mins after we got it going, the power came back on. But yeah they are very important.

Both Honda, not sure what model etc. Gotta empty the gasoline out if they're gonna be idle for a while i think. They work fine now.

Once we had an ice storm and no power for 3 days with temps in the teens. Had generators keeping house warm and tv & internet on etc.

Yeah, allowing gas, especially gas that is part ethanol, to sit in the carbs for months (years?) at a time falls squarely on your shoulders, especially when Honda has incorporated the ability to drain the carb bowls of fuel on their generators.

As an added precaution, find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas and replenish your stock of gas every 6 months with ethanol free gas. As an added precaution, use marine Sta-Bil.

As long as the necessary precautions are taken, gas powered generators are very reliable, and if you are that concerned, there are a couple vendors offering triple fuel Yamaha inverter generators with a full factory warranties.

Most inverter generators only supply 120 v., so if you need 240 for something like a well pump you are out of luck. I went through the decision process and decided on a 5500 watt portable connected to a manual transfer switch. It puts out 240 v and is able to handle my well pump, two fridges, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, lights, TV, etc. Can run one water heater if other things are minimized. It cost under $1K. Looked at an automatic whole house generator, but given that the heating/cooling is handled by two large geothermal heat pumps it would have been an expensive project requiring installation of a big propane tank, as we have no natural gas service. Emergency heat is handled by a wood stove, bottled gas logs in a fireplace, and a kerosene heater. Have had only one extended power outage (24 hours) in the past 10 years.

The Yamaha I linked to above supplies 240 and enough watts to start your well pump. The only time 8t would fall short for you 8s if your refrigerator and well pump both started within one tenth of a second of each other. That's not much of a concern.
