Subject: Fenwick West

Continuing its momentum from 2017, Fenwick & West has reported the firm’s highest-ever financial growth in 2018, thanks to record-setting gross revenue.

The Silicon Valley firm boosted its revenue by 14.6 percent to $429.69 million in 2018, while profits per partner grew by 20.2 percent to $1.82 million, according to preliminary ALM data. The results show a major acceleration from 2017, when the firm reported that revenue rose 3.7 percent and PPP grew 1.5 percent.

Would I be crazy to choose Fenwick over MoFo or Cooley?

Postby 8green » Sat Jan 12, 2019 4:37 pm

Hi y'all! Would it be a bad idea to choose Fenwick over MoFo or Cooley for start up corporate work? I'm ultimately interested in clean tech. Does anyone know anything really good about Fenwick to ease my hesitation? Thanks for your advice/ words of wisdom in advance!

impressive PPP given this firm's geographic footprint - making $1.3m in North Carolina is pretty legit. i am opposite them from time to time and while they don't land Latham-talent they have plenty of good old school utility lawyers and the like. not all of it is sexy work but i get the sense these guys don't kill themselves like Milbank.

Cadwalader is the most consistently brutal in terms of hours, and they fuck you over on making partner. However, you don't generally get fired as an associate and will have plenty of sophisticated matters to work on. Dechert is its own kind of hell - low job security, second-rate lawyering in certain practices, extreme volatility in workload. maybe partnership prospects are better - don't really know.

"a drop in equity partners, at 5.9 percent [from 556] to 523, was slightly more pronounced.

Immelt attributed the latter decline to the wider demographics of law firms, where a growing number of baby boomers are reaching the end of their careers and retiring.

...

Litigation, on the other hand, has been more of a challenge, Immelt said, pointing to intense competition and rate pressure.

“You really have to be focused on the disputes where people really feel there’s a lot at stake,” he said. “We’ve continued to evolve our litigation practice so that it’s focused on larger class actions and data breach matters, for example.”"

n a year when Am Law 100 firms are regularly announcing year-on-year revenue growth in excess of 10 percent, Winston & Strawn’s 1.3 percent top-line nudge to $991 million in 2018 doesn’t initially look like much to celebrate.

But that is before you take into account the contingency fee windfall the firm received in 2017, which chair Thomas Fitzgerald said in an interview was nearly $100 million. Deducting those fees from the year-on-year comparison, Winston’s revenue bump last year would have been closer to 12 percent, Fitzgerald said.
