For me, I’d say prime Pedro, or maybe prime Kershaw through 2017. (Decline phase started last year.)

Maybe OldHLSDude can come ITT and tell us about Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax.

He struck out 276 batters as a 19-year-old rookie. At 20, he went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and 268 K's, probably while doing massive amounts of drugs.

Even with all his fuck ups, he managed to throw a no hitter in 1996 and ended up with 194 wins.

he led the league in ERA+, WHIP and FIP three years in a row while winning 2 Cy Youngs. You have high standards for dominance if that doesn't count.

I watched the Randy Johnson perfect game live on tv. There were very few pitches the batters could even see. 8th and 9th inning were as anti climactic as they could be. Also he just walked off the mound like no big deal (the catcher was 10x more excited than he was). Seemed like he could have gone another six innings.

OTOH, I was at yankee stadium in 99 when pedro one hit (17ks) a team that won the World Series.

Hard to say either was more dominant.

Pedro is the clear answer. Johnson inspired the most fear. Clemons, Kershaw, Maddux in some order after that.

"Pedro is the clear answer. Johnson inspired the most fear."

This seems like a fair compromise. Should acknowledge that Pedro's reign was much shorter.

Actually, for people in most of the 90’s it was Johnson, without a doubt. Pedro for only a little for a few years after Randy. Doc had the best stuff in the shortest amount of time. Ryan wasn’t dominant, just lasting, unfortunately.

Interesting thing about Johnson is that his prime came later. For years he struggled with control because of his height. Even when he became an All Star-caliber pitcher, his control held him back. But in 1995 (age 31) he took it to another level, and went on a crazy run through 2002.

Seems right. Pedro's ERA+ from 1999-2003 was 243, 291, 188, 202, 211. Johnson's highest career ERA+ was 195 (but he had a bunch of years that were close). So they were generally comparable, but Pedro had 2 year otherworldly seasons (he also had a 219 ERA+ in 1997 with the Expos).

I don’t understand all of you guys flaming about Nolan Ryan. Did some moron write an article saying Ryan was overrated because he walked a lot of guys?

Go look at his stats. He had a 2.97 FIP over 5000 innings. That’s a better FIP than RJ. 72-91 he was dominant. Yes he walked a lot of guys, but he made up for it by not giving up many hits (he has the best h/9 stat of anyone, better than Keyshawn, and achieved that over 5000 innings).

You can't overrely on one stat

in the 1970s there were 24 teams. in the 2000s when pedro was in his prime there were 30.

Ryan lead the lead in ERA+ twice, was in the top 10 seven times. The overall number is down compared to Pedro have because pitching quality was overall better and got thin as fuck in the late 90s to early 00s especially as the league roided up.

That's why i point to FIP numbers instead to show dominance compared to his peers of the 70s and 80s. He was in the top ten in his league almost every year from 72-91:

1972 AL 2.49 (3rd)

1973 AL 2.49 (2nd)

1974 AL 2.98 (4th)

1976 AL 2.91 (6th)

1977 AL 3.12 (4th)

1978 AL 2.96 (5th)

1979 AL 3.22 (3rd)

1980 NL 2.89 (2nd)

1981 NL 2.28 (2nd)

1983 NL 3.09 (8th)

1984 NL 2.66 (4th)

1985 NL 2.90 (7th)

1986 NL 3.06 (7th)

1987 NL 2.47 (1st)

1989 AL 2.51 (2nd)

1990 AL 2.87 (3rd)

1991 AL 2.75 (2nd)

I am not arguing that he was more dominant than RJ or Pedro or Clemens in their prime, but this stathead fascination with pretending Nolan Ryan was some second tier player like Pete Rose who happened to play a long time is off base.

Ryan also pitched in a time where pitchers were expected to pitch, not throw for 5-2/3 innings and let the set-up fags take over. Should have thrown in the dead ball era and he’d have 511+ wins and 7000 strike outs.

It's Randy and Pedro for me as well. These two games in particular, the best performances I've seen in person:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA199108140.shtml

https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA199909040.shtml

Randy was more intimidating, and he had to be. In the Kingdome, one | wrong | move was going 400 feet. That was a crazy shithole of a park. Pedro was pure dominance though. You could see the look of defeat on the players.

Pitchers just rarely go deep like this anymore

Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, had this to say: “Randy Johnson may be a pus-throwing fastballer who is now trying to hold it together in the twilight of his career. But while birds are in jeopardy, we must be vigilant. Who knows when the next phenom will obliterate an innocent pigeon? No. Baseball must stop. And NASA is not any better. How can a government funded endeavor purport to increase knowledge while cavalierly slaughtering innocent animals and then incinerate them in rocket exhaust. We fund government. We’ll stop this inhumanity.”

He had one season where he fooled people with his leg kick. Problem was it only worked the first time you saw him. The hitters watched him on video, saw him a couple times and then it didn't work anymore.

He also got cited for urinating in the street a few times, that didn't help.

Because of postseason. Braves just didn't have the bats Pedro had behind him. Maddox is the best pitcher of are lives.

pedro led the league in ERA 5 times. has 2 seasons with an ERA under 2. led the league in WHIP 6 times. 6 seasons with a WHIP under 1. had over 300 ks twice. over 200 ks 9 times. led league in ks 3 times.

maddux led the league in ERA 4 times. also 2 seasons with an ERA under 2. led league in WHIP 4 times. 4 seasons with a WHIP under 1. had over 200 ks just once, never led the league in ks.

maddux got to pitch way more postseason games in his prime.

Maddux was not pitching to a strike out. His control was beyond ridiculous.

But maddux also pitched in the NL. Pedro doing what he did in the roided up AL East of the late 90s is just not comparable with anyone imho.

Pedro and Maddox were equally unimpressive in the postseason, a la Lershaw.

Pedro had seven shutout innings in a world series game the year the Red Sox broke the curse. He pitched more innings than any other pitcher in the 2004 ALCS, including on short rest.

Who, exactly, is your daddy?

If just starting pitchers, then Randy Johnson by a mile. If you also include relievers than Mariano Rivera probably gets the nod.

I was still a little kid, but Orel Hershiser in 88/89 .

His scoreless-innings streak has still never been beaten, and he won the World Series right then too.

The second and third time through the order the batters gains an advantage. So only throwing 1300 career innings and never seeing a batter twice is a joke.

best adjusted ERA+ seasons show Pedro with 2 in the top 10 and best in modern era, and Maddux with 2 in the top 5.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/earned_run_avg_plus_season.shtml

Randy Johnson obviously has an intimidation factor and 350 strikeout seasons. But Maddux and Pedro each had seasons with ERAs less than 2. Maddux won the WS (and his 4th Cy Young in a row) in a season where he went 19-2 with a 1.63 ERA.

Pedro was pitching in the AL East and his 2000 season still is the best of all time statistically.
